About the Role

UCP Long Island is seeking a Teacher's Aide to support a classroom teacher in developing, organizing, and implementing daily instructional activities for students with disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist classroom teacher in curriculum implementation by working with individuals or groups of students.
  • Assist in implementing strategies suggested by clinicians and the teacher.
  • Perform frequent daily lifting of individuals with disabilities (ages 2-21), who may weigh approximately twenty-five through one hundred pounds.
  • Assist in developing individual education plans with the teacher.
  • Review each student's individualized education plan with the teacher.
  • Assist teacher in the collection and maintenance of data for each student.
  • Follow daily routine developed by the teacher, including basic care of students, maintaining order and cleanliness of the learning environment, and implementing educational strategies.
  • Provide input on student progress and specific concerns/problems.
  • Observe universal precautions and practice proper infection control techniques.
  • Assist classroom teacher in developing objectives to meet student needs.
  • Assist in oral and written communication.
  • Confer with teacher regarding daily plans by assisting with preparation for activities and readiness of equipment and supplies.
  • Actively participate in appropriate education and agency in-service programs and follow agency/school policy and procedures.
  • Attend team meetings when required.
  • Assist in escorting students throughout the school environment.
  • Participate in planning of student and school-centered activities.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining a nurturing environment conducive to learning and assisting in maintenance and hygiene routines.
  • Maintain student confidentiality and use discretion when discussing student-related matters.
  • Assist with learning activities and follow through on behavior management routines.
  • Perform all job responsibilities in a professional manner.
  • May be assigned a 1:1 aide position.
  • Perform other related classroom duties as may be assigned by the teacher.
  • Perform duties as assigned by the Director of Educational Services/Principal or designee.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Previous experience preferred but not required.
  • Bi-lingual Spanish a plus.
