About the Role
The Youth and Child Care Specialist is responsible for supervising pregnant and parenting residents, ensuring a warm and constructive residential environment. This role promotes the development of independent living skills for pregnant and parenting teens and upholds the program's core concepts for behavior management: Safety, Responsibility, Respect, and Personal Growth. The specialist collaborates with team members to maintain a trauma-informed environment and therapeutic milieu.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and support pregnant/parenting teens, actively participating in recreation and structured programming.
- Teach independent living skills (e.g., laundry, cleaning, cooking) and effective parenting skills through positive role modeling.
- Co-facilitate groups as necessary and participate in the training and implementation of Trauma Systems Therapy.
- Disseminate a strengths-based behavior management system among residents, maintaining a therapeutic milieu.
- Provide safe childcare and developmentally appropriate learning for children in the program.
- Perform childcare duties such as changing diapers, bathing, dressing, and feeding children.
- Assist with meal preparation for residents in the absence of the program cook.
- Administer medications to adolescent mothers, pregnant teens, and children as instructed, and accurately document administration.
- Prepare rooms for new admissions, including sanitizing, cleaning, making beds, and creating a welcoming basket.
- Facilitate new admission orientation, reviewing the Resident M/C Program Manual.
- Ensure proper medical clearances for new admissions.
- Uphold expectations of the Primary role and implement trauma-informed responses with youth.
- Assist pregnant and parenting residents in developing effective parenting skills and positive behavior while promoting independence.
- Comply with Agency rules, policies, and procedures, and uphold Program standard operating procedures.
- Ensure timely submission of proper documentation, including daily shift logs, program notes, medication reports, and incident reports.
- Report all problems, critical incidents, and unusual situations to the Lead Youth and Child Care Specialist, Program Director, Supervisor, and/or Social Workers.
- Document all critical, serious, and unusual incidents in the communication log and write internal Incident Reports.
- Conduct room checks at least every 30 minutes throughout the shift, as required by regulations and policy.
- Read the communication log at the beginning of each shift and accurately document shift activities.
- Work collaboratively with the case planning team to ensure youth goals are identified and consistently monitored.
- Promote and maintain a safe, secure, and nurturing environment for residents.
- Escort residents to ER visits, medical appointments, and school as directed.
- Participate in orientation for new client admissions, treatment updates, and case planning meetings.
- Ensure all residents attend structured program activities, including therapeutic, independent living, birthing & parenting, health & human sexuality, tutoring, and mentoring groups.
- Remain flexible with changing duties and schedules to accommodate program needs.
- Remain on shift until relief has arrived.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associates or Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Must have supervisory experience.
- Must have experience working with adolescents and children.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- At least 1-2 years of experience working with pregnant and parenting teens.
- 1-2 years of experience taking care of infants and toddlers.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- Good organizational skills and inter-personal relational skills.
- Ability to engage difficult and acting out adolescents.
- Knowledge of pregnancy, infant development, and adolescent development.
- Ability to support, nurture, and discipline children and youth in a structured environment.
- Demonstrated strong commitment to safety.
