About the Role
This position requires a strong customer service orientation, focusing on exceeding customer expectations. The role involves performing electrical system construction, installation, modification, maintenance, and repair according to blueprints, specifications, and codes. A key responsibility includes managing fire alarm systems to ensure campus safety, along with estimating project costs and inspecting work.
Responsibilities
- Layout, assemble, and install wiring in University buildings and outside electrical distribution systems.
- Install, maintain, and repair electrical appliances and equipment.
- Diagnose and correct electrical systems and equipment malfunctions.
- Test, adjust, sequence, synchronize, and align AC and DC power supplies, control panels, motors, generators, circuit breakers, and relay panels.
- Determine methods and sequence of operations for relocating, designing, installing, testing, repairing, and modifying electrical systems and equipment by interpreting diagrams and following instructions.
- Estimate cost and time requirements for jobs and order necessary materials.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain all types of electrical and electronic control circuits.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electrical power distribution equipment, transformers, and switchgear.
- Provide technical guidance and direction to support staff.
- Maintain, repair, and inspect high voltage lines, transformers, and switches.
- Install and monitor electrical test equipment for various electrical components.
- Install computer lines, including cost estimates and purchasing necessary cabling.
- Install, maintain, and troubleshoot cable television distribution.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain elevators.
- Assist outside electrical contracting companies on site.
- Respond to campus-wide power outages.
- Follow NFPA 70 E (arc flash) standards.
- Learn new electrical techniques to stay current with technologies.
- Make decisions in line with Clarkson University values.
- Operate and work safely at all times, maintaining high standards of housekeeping.
- Provide mentoring and leadership to interns, apprentices, and/or student workers.
- Complete training to meet trade-specific and University standards.
- Complete Clarkson Vehicle Safety Checklist before vehicle use and maintain assigned vehicle.
- Operate a Clarkson vehicle in accordance with University policy.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Deliver timely, friendly, and effective service to University faculty, staff, and students.
- Encourage and promote teamwork.
- Gain general knowledge of the campus.
- Participate in reporting of campus damage and/or safety issues.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Documented record of taking courses and/or training to stay current/grow skills in trade.
- Hold a valid NYS driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to be Arc Flash certified within 6 months of employment.
- All staff has a statutory responsibility to take reasonable care of themselves, others, and the environment.
- Adhere to the University’s Health, Safety, and Environmental Policy & Procedures.
- Successfully pass a background check.

Experience Level
- Four (4) years of journeyman equivalent experience as an electrician or in related trade.
- Five (5) or more years at the journeyman equivalent experience as an electrician (preferred).
Education Level
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Associates degree in electrical related field (preferred).
- Journeyman card in electrical (preferred).
- Fire Alarm (NYSET Certified) (preferred).
Salary/Compensations
- USD $26.44 - USD $26.44 /Hr.
