About the Role
The Toronto High Containment Facility (THCF) has expanded its operations and services significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic. This Lab Technician will support the Facility Manager and Scientific Director to deliver the expanded mandate of the CL3/Biobank/Viral Core facilities. You will support high-impact research projects, ensuring efficient and consistent operations of the in vitro CL3 facility and viral core, including maintenance, inventory control, developing assays and materials, and participating in collaborative research. You will ensure operational excellence in a dynamic, high-compliance work environment.
Responsibilities
- Construct proof of concept experiments to test different elements of the process.
- Collect experimental data, verify results, prepare draft statistical reports and summaries, and distribute findings.
- Prepare, assemble, and set up materials, equipment, and supplies according to facility needs, following procedural instructions for sterilizing materials.
- Schedule the use of lab equipment and resources.
- Troubleshoot issues with lab equipment and/or workstations and coordinate routine maintenance.
- Apply established standards when preparing lab equipment, for lab testing, and for cleaning, sanitizing, and sterilizing facilities.
- Provide detailed explanations and demonstrate procedures to students and employees on lab techniques, experimental procedures, and protocols.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience.
- Minimum two years of relevant laboratory experience in infectious disease, virology, bacteriology, or equivalent biologicals.
- Experience conducting research and strictly adhering to SOPs in a CL3 environment.
- Demonstrated experience supporting labs, including equipment setup, reagent preparation, purchasing supplies, and maintaining research facility operations.
- Experience tracking and maintaining libraries of sensitive samples, biobanks, and/or valuable biological samples.
- Experience serving as a resource and providing technical support, training, and troubleshooting to users.
- Experience working with and maintaining lab equipment (biosafety cabinets, centrifuges, CO2 incubators, ULT freezers, general microscopy, qPCR).
- Experience with respiratory protection (N95 fit test, PAPRs etc.) and performing work with aerosol transmitting human pathogens.
- Experience operating autoclaves and performing biological indicator testing for sterilization verification.
- Experience in collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data for presentation.
- Experience with pre-clinical experiments and animal research.
- High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent oral and written English communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative to meet deadlines, and ensure issues are addressed promptly.
- Ability to work effectively in a team, possess excellent time management skills, sound judgment, exemplary organizational skills, and a commitment to research.
- Strong knowledge of local and federal health and safety regulations for CL3 laboratory conditions.
- Experience applying SOPs for lab safety compliance measures.
