About the Role

We are seeking a full-time Environmental Designer specializing in Energy Analysis to join Atelier Ten San Francisco. This role focuses on collaborating on projects to achieve energy efficiency and carbon emissions reduction goals, producing technical deliverables, performing energy modeling, and developing engineering strategies for building systems.

Responsibilities

Learn and apply internal methodologies for energy analysis protocols (e.g., ASHRAE 90.1) for new and existing building projects.
Participate in customized training to build critical thinking skills and understand building science principles.
Develop shoe-box and whole building energy models using IES-VE and/or eQuest.
Evaluate envelope performance, massing, and mechanical system optioneering.
Identify and analyze net-zero energy and carbon strategies.
Support senior staff with sustainability assessments, energy and thermal comfort analysis, and life cycle cost analysis.
Collaborate with integrated design groups on environmental design consulting, daylight analysis, and benchmarking.
Use analytical and computational methods to analyze building physics and systems.
Assist colleagues with energy analysis tasks, including simulations for carbon emissions and cost analysis.
Review and interpret architectural and mechanical design documentation for energy modeling.
Collaborate with external teams to provide energy and carbon emissions improvement recommendations.
Develop new approaches and tools with the Energy Analysis practice to enhance team efficiency.
Prepare written summaries and technical reports for clients.
Develop and maintain in-house databases, spreadsheet tools, methods, and standards.
Attend site visits and project meetings, and present analyses to stakeholders.

Bachelor's or higher degree in Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, or Sustainable Building Design.
1-4 years of professional work experience in whole-building energy analysis, building physics, and/or high-performance HVAC design for commercial buildings.
Experience in specialized building energy simulation software (IES-VE and/or eQuest preferred, EnergyPlus and/or Grasshopper is a plus).
Ability to develop and articulate engineering problems related to HVAC design, building envelope performance, passive conditioning, energy use, and carbon emissions.
Experience or understanding of HVAC and plumbing systems design for commercial buildings.
Direct experience applying ASHRAE Standards 90.1, 55, 62.1, and 189.
Experience with Green Building Rating systems (e.g., LEED, WELL, Living Building Challenge) and energy code compliance.
Experience gathering and documenting energy model inputs and outputs, interpreting results, and documenting analysis.
Verbal and written fluency in English.
Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Preferred credentials: BEMP, CEM, EIT, LEED GA or AP.
