About the Role

The Bilingual WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor supports participants following the NYS DOH WIC Loving Support model, with routine quality assessments for continuous improvement. This grant-funded position is for a limited time through the WIC office and Suffolk County Department of Health Services.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and manage participant data ensuring confidentiality.
  • Provide counseling and support throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Utilize counseling skills acquired during training.
  • Be a resource for participants and connect them with community services.
  • Prepare participants for the initial breastfeeding experience.
  • Be available to participants after delivery and upon returning home.
  • Maintain an acceptable working relationship with NYS DOH WIC.
  • Coordinate and report with CCE Suffolk Supervisor on employment issues, concerns, policies, and procedures.
  • Manage assigned caseload, track hours, meetings, and training, and meet deadlines.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree and one-year volunteer or work-related experience, OR high school diploma or equivalency with 2 years of volunteer or work experience.
  • Ability to communicate, read, and write in English and Spanish.
  • Proficiency with Windows-based software, including internet navigation and basic Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Publisher).
  • Ability to meet travel requirements.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and occasional overnight travel.
  • Ability to carry supplies and equipment.
  • Experience with breastfeeding (at least one child).
  • Good organizational skills.
