About the Role
The University of Rochester is seeking a Licensing Manager to administer and promote the University's intellectual property programs, manage technology transfer activities, and negotiate license agreements. This role is crucial for commercializing University innovations and ensuring compliance with regulations.
Responsibilities
- Administer and promote the University's intellectual property programs.
- Ensure University compliance with regulations.
- Manage disposition of technology disclosures.
- Provide marketing and management support for technology transfer activities.
- Negotiate and maintain license agreements.
- Manage activities related to the patent application filing and maintenance process.
- Maintain contact with University personnel at all levels, including researchers, deans, and department chairs.
- Liaise with external patent counsel and industry representatives.
- Interact with federal grant personnel and corporate sponsors regarding compliance.
- Assume responsibility for special projects and studies.
- Develop or coordinate the development of educational tools.
- Assist with the development of University-wide or internal policies.
- Assist in presentations and training workshops on technology transfer and small business formation.
- Develop and implement strategies for the commercialization of University innovations.
- Market University technology.
- Identify potential licensees and negotiate licensing agreements.
- Monitor compliance with licensing agreements.
- Manage ongoing relationships with licensees.
- Maintain an organized and up-to-date IP portfolio.
- Track patent applications, issued patents, and other relevant documentation.
- Maintain administrative and financial systems support for the program.
- Prepare detailed reports on licensing activities, technology transfer outcomes, and financial performance.
- Provide counsel, advice, and expertise to faculty on intellectual property matters.
- Collaborate with researchers and legal counsel to secure patents and other forms of IP protection.
- Receive and take appropriate action on technology disclosures.
- Provide education and training on IP management, technology transfer processes, and commercialization strategies.
- Conduct market research to identify potential markets and applications for University technologies.
- Stay informed of trends, policies, and procedures in the field.
- Assist ORPA with Research Agreements, Material Transfer Agreements, and Confidentiality Agreements.
- Serve as a resource for faculty on intellectual property and commercialization matters.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree required, preferably in engineering, particularly biomedical engineering.
- An advanced degree in business, law, or the sciences is highly preferred.
- Strong preference for experience in high-technology biomedical business, with interest in startup companies.
- 3 years of relevant experience required.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.

- Strong knowledge of intellectual property law and technology licensing.
- Proven experience negotiating and managing complex licensing agreements.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to build relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders.
