About the Role
The Intellectual Property Counsel (IP Counsel) at L3Harris is a legal specialist and a valued member of the L3Harris Office of the General Counsel. This role is expected to contribute to business and intellectual property decisions, requiring a deep understanding of the L3Harris business. The IP Counsel must be responsive, prioritize effectively, demonstrate strong leadership, exercise independent judgment, collaborate within a team, and uphold the highest professional standards.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and guidance on government IP rights, data rights, FAR and DFARS, and U.S. Government business.
- Manage the patent acquisition process within established budgets, including selecting and managing outside counsel, disclosing inventions, conducting patentability investigations, and managing patent applications and patents domestically and internationally.
- Assist with technology transfer between L3Harris and other parties, including drafting and negotiating technology licenses, and supporting M&A and other transactions.
- Manage the trademark process, including acquisition, advising on mark selection and use, conducting right to use investigations, and managing trademark applications and registrations.
- Enforce L3Harris’ intellectual property rights through competitor product investigation, negotiation of IP licenses, or litigation.
- Provide guidance in mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and other business ventures concerning intellectual property.
- Manage third-party claims of infringement, including investigations, negotiation of licenses, and defense in litigation.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of L3Harris’ technology.
- Be responsive to customers and meet deadlines for advice and document preparation.
- Anticipate legal issues and practice preventive law through early involvement.
- Provide guidance on respecting third-party IP rights.
- Provide training and written guidelines on IP rights acquisition and preservation.
- Act as an enterprise focal for Open-source licensing reviews and approvals.
- Support CISO in cybersecurity and AI efforts, including policy review, regulation compliance, and incident response management.
- Travel up to 10% when necessary.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 12 years of prior relevant experience, OR Graduate Degree and a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience, OR In lieu of a degree, minimum of 16 years of prior related experience.
- Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school.
- Current license to practice before a state bar.
- Admission to the United States Patent Bar.
- A minimum of 7 to 10+ years of legal experience in a similar in-house position or equivalent law firm experience.
