About the Role
The Laboratory Animal Technician Assistant performs routine husbandry services for research animals, providing technical support to ensure animal well-being and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine animal husbandry and sanitation.
- Stock supplies and monitor animal health and environmental conditions.
- Support facility operations as assigned.
- Understand the role of an Animal Care Technician and its impact on research.
- Apply knowledge of laboratory animal care regulations and guidelines.
- Provide husbandry services ensuring proper care, health, and sanitation.
- Observe animals daily for signs of illness, injury, or distress and report concerns.
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures and special instructions.
- Maintain accurate records including animal inventories, supply inventories, and logs.
- Assist with report preparation as requested.
- Determine the sex of common laboratory animal species.
- Recognize species-specific housing, biosecurity, sanitation, and sterilization requirements.
- Inspect and evaluate caging, physical plant, and equipment, reporting issues.
- Ensure corrective actions for identified problems are completed.
- Adhere to attendance requirements and maintain personal hygiene standards.
- Comply with institutional policies regarding hazardous substances and equipment use.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Less than 1 year of relevant experience.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience.
- General experience with animals in a work or research environment is preferred.
