About the Role
The Bureau of Child Care seeks an Early Childhood Education Consultant to monitor and make recommendations to childcare programs throughout New York City, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations and promoting early childhood development.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate and assess child care programs for compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and performance standards.
- Provide consultation, guidance, and technical assistance to childcare providers on educational programming and best practices.
- Serve as a resource on current trends and research in Early Childhood Education.
- Issue notices of violation and make recommendations regarding permits, licenses, or program closures.
- Examine records and files to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Investigate complaints about licensed child care services and allegations of unlicensed care.
- Represent the Department at professional conferences and participate in professional development.
- Travel throughout the five boroughs using mass transit or personal vehicle, carrying inspection equipment weighing approximately 15 pounds.
- Travel to Albany, NY for training and elsewhere in the state for annual meetings.
Requirements
- A master's degree in education from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by 12 semester hour graduate credits in early childhood or elementary education.
- Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a director or educational director of a licensed school/program for pre-school/kindergarten groups with at least two licensed teachers.
- Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a teacher director of a licensed school/program for pre-school/kindergarten groups with at least one other licensed teacher.
- Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a consultant in early childhood education evaluating programs and/or providing expert advice.
- Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a consultant in early childhood education evaluating programs and/or providing expert advice in a public agency.
- A baccalaureate degree in education from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by student teaching in early childhood education (pre-K to 2nd grade) in an acceptable licensed program.
- A master's degree from an accredited college or university in education, social work, psychology, or counseling.
- Five years of satisfactory teaching experience as a licensed teacher of early childhood education may substitute for three years of experience.
- For Assignment Level II, one additional year of the described satisfactory experience is required.
