About the Role

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner investigates deaths within New York City under various circumstances. Working in the OCME Legal Department offers unique experience at the intersection of forensic science, pathology, and law, with opportunities to practice criminal and civil law. The role supports the public interest and offers predictable hours.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice to agency personnel, including laboratories, forensic pathology, human resources, and other units.
  • Draft and review contracts, including data sharing agreements.
  • Review and interpret court orders related to the DNA laboratory.
  • Monitor litigation involving the agency and interact with litigation counsel.
  • Assist with subpoenas, records requests, and criminal/civil discovery legal advice and productions.
  • Draft administrative subpoenas to assist medical examiners and medico-legal investigators.
  • Assist agency witnesses with preparation for civil and criminal court appearances.
  • Handle Freedom of Information Law requests.
  • Review scientific research proposals, surveillance studies, and human subject research submissions.
  • Review and analyze local, state, and federal law and legislative recommendations impacting the agency.
  • Communicate with next of kin, authorized persons, attorneys, and estate administrators regarding agency cases.
  • Assist with agency outreach to the City's Conflict of Interest Board.
  • Assist with city-wide data and information reporting obligations.

Requirements

  • Admission to the New York State Bar.
  • One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar, OR six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne.
  • Must remain a Member of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of employment.
  • To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at AL I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar.
  • To be assigned to AL III, candidates must have two years of experience in AL I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is required.
  • The Office of Chief Medical Examiner does not provide sponsorship for visa applications, extensions, or status changes.

Skills

  • Experience with scientific laboratories (including DNA and toxicology laboratories) and/or forensic pathology, mortuary operations, or medical examiners.
  • Experience with criminal prosecution/defense, particularly in New York City.
  • Experience with contract drafting/review.
  • Experience with labor and employment or human resource matters.
  • Three years or more of legal experience.
