About the Role
Develop and maintain simulation software for engineers and customers, integrating changes across connected applications and services. This simulated tooling is critical for testing flight control and autonomous systems before deployment, training operators, and rehearsing missions.
Responsibilities
- Build and extend the real-time simulation of UAVs, sensors, and operating environments.
- Develop vehicle dynamics models and validate them against measured flight data.
- Integrate flight control and autonomy software with the simulation for pre-deployment testing.
- Provide an environment for integrating and exercising flight control, autonomy, communications, and ground control software to identify faults.
- Scale the simulation to handle multiple vehicles simultaneously over unreliable networks.
- Ensure the simulation is effective, reliable, and accessible for developers, trainers, and end users.
- Automate headless simulation runs, repeatable scenarios, and results reporting within CI/CD pipelines.
- Build realistic virtual environments and scenarios from real-world data.
- Integrate multiple subsystems into a cohesive whole and identify emergent faults.
- Replay logged flight data through models to reproduce airborne events and create regression tests.
- Support simulation use for training and mission rehearsal.
- Generate synthetic sensor data for computer vision and perception models.
- Participate in flight testing to gather validation data and observe real system behavior.
Requirements
- Proven experience writing high-performance, modern C++ with hard real-time and determinism constraints.
- Willingness to work across application code, engine, networking, tooling, and build systems.
- Comfortable with version control, CI/CD, and automated testing.
- Willingness to be involved in field testing and validation against real flight.
- Eligible for UK security clearance (SC): UK citizen or 5+ years UK residency.
- Solid grounding in the mathematics of physical simulation: rigid-body dynamics, numerical integration, and coordinate frames and conventions.
- Flight dynamics or 6-DOF modelling experience, and validation against measured real-world data.
- Experience with distributed or networked simulation, including time synchronization, state replication, and behavior over unreliable links.
- Experience with Model-, software-, hardware-, or vehicle-in-the-loop testing (MIL, SIL, HIL, VIL).
- Experience with autonomous aerospace systems, autonomous vehicles, motorsports, robotics, or simulation-heavy games development.
- Experience with a real-time simulation engine, focusing on systems and performance.
- Virtual reality development or human-in-the-loop trials experience.
- Experience with model-based design and verification from regulated domains like MATLAB/Simulink, SysML, ISO 26262, or DO-178C.
- Python experience for tooling, data analysis, and automation.
- Familiarity with Unreal Engine or similar.
- Experience using AI coding agents to accelerate development and adapt to changing requirements.
- Knowledge of building guardrails for AI agents to maintain scope and code quality.
