About the Role

As a Staff Software Engineer at Project Q GmbH, you will directly impact the technical direction of our orchestration products, Hydris and its underpinning interoperability API. You will work on integrating heterogeneous real-world systems into a tactical IoT backbone, addressing challenges in distributed systems, protocols, and data modeling within constrained and intermittently connected environments. This role is hands-on and requires shaping product development and technical strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build the core engine systems for Hydris.
  • Own the architecture of systems running reliably on edge hardware, in disconnected mesh networks, and at scale.
  • Evolve the schema defining sensor, asset, and mission system communication with Hydris.
  • Make API design decisions for client libraries.
  • Refine the integration framework for connecting new sensor types, data sources, and command systems.
  • Set patterns for built-in integrations (ADS-B, AIS, ASTERIX, Meshtastic, SpaceTrack, TAK, federation).
  • Enable external developers and system vendors to build plugins/integrations for Hydris.
  • Architect the peer-to-peer mesh and federation layer for disconnected, denied, intermittent, and limited-bandwidth environments.
  • Solve coordination problems like conflict resolution, eventual consistency, and track correlation.
  • Ensure graceful system degradation during connectivity loss.
  • Set technical standards for testing distributed behavior, protocol versioning, and backward compatibility.
  • Review code for long-term maintainability and operational correctness.
  • Make build-versus-integrate decisions and communicate trade-offs.

Requirements

  • Have built and shipped distributed systems that run in production, ideally in environments where reliability matters more than convenience.
  • Are comfortable working across the stack, from Protobuf schema design and systems-level Go, to TypeScript.
  • Have well-formed views about API design and protocol evolution, informed by experience maintaining APIs that other people depend on.
  • Can operate effectively with a high degree of autonomy but are adept at collaboration toward high-quality technical decisions.
  • Are interested in contributing to European military, maritime, and critical infrastructure defence systems.
  • Write clearly and communicate architectural decisions effectively.
  • Candidates must already be eligible to work in Germany.
