About the Role
The Licensed Vocational Nurse is responsible for admitting patients, providing pre-operative nursing care, and developing individualized nursing care plans. Employees may be cross-trained and expected to perform duties outside their normal scope based on changing staffing and patient needs.
Responsibilities
- Maintains a clean and therapeutic pre-operative environment.
- Provides patient instructions as directed by a physician or physician assistant.
- Ensures necessary supplies and equipment are available and functional.
- Admits patients and prepares them for scheduled procedures.
- Performs initial assessments to determine patient needs.
- Explains nursing procedures to reduce patient anxiety.
- Monitors patient condition and reports significant changes.
- Ensures required documentation is present before procedures.
- Performs pre-operative and post-operative patient calls.
- Communicates additional discharge needs, such as transportation or durable medical equipment.
- Educates patients and families, providing emotional support.
- Reports important health history facts to the operating room nurse/medical director.
- Accurately documents patient care in the medical record.
- Implements doctor's orders in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintains established Center/Departmental policies and procedures.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient and Center-related business.
- Develops and maintains effective working relationships with patients, families, visitors, and staff.
- Documents concisely, precisely, and accurately on all records.
- Plans for routine events and anticipates/manages emergent situations.
- Completes patient care responsibilities efficiently with accurate documentation.
- Uses downtime effectively and assists team members.
- Performs other job duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Understands and maintains clinical competencies, including age-specific care and drug administration.
- Practices nursing within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act of Texas.
- Accepts responsibility and accountability for own actions.
- Demonstrates clinical problem-solving and critical thinking using an evidence-based approach.
- Adapts to unexpected changes and various work schedules to achieve high-quality care.
- Maintains composure and avoids aggressive behavior in difficult situations.
- Responds quickly and effectively when priorities or patient condition changes.
- Deals calmly and effectively with high-stress situations.
- Maintains effective records and organized systems for timely patient flow.
- Cleans, maintains, and makes minor adjustments to equipment.
- Complies with facility policies, procedures, and continuing education programs.

- Excellent, professionally polished patient communication and interaction skills.
- Ability to adequately diagnose, plan, implement nursing interventions, and evaluate patient condition.
- Computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) and E-Clinical.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Exceptional customer service and phone etiquette.
- Energetic with a desire to learn and develop new skills.

Experience Level

Education Level
- High School diploma or GED
- Current LVN licensure in the State of Texas
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certified
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified
