About the Role
MODE is a dynamic, fast-growing early-stage startup at the forefront of the generative AI and IoT revolution. We are expanding our presence in both Japan and the US, pioneering innovative solutions that bridge the physical and digital worlds. As we enter our 'second founding period,' we are seeking a Japan COO to lead our Japanese operations, driving growth from 500 million yen to 5 billion yen in revenue while overseeing all corporate functions. This role is crucial for bridging the US headquarters and the Japanese organization, fostering trust, and leading decision-making.
Responsibilities
- Lead revenue and ARR growth in the Japanese market, supporting the sales organization and overseeing business model enhancement, pricing, sales strategy, budget management, and resource allocation.
- Identify and resolve bottlenecks hindering deal progress, such as decision-making delays, internal resource shortages, or inadequate proposal quality.
- Build trust with key clients and partners by establishing executive-level relationships in collaboration with the CEO and business development team.
- Lead negotiations and contract closures for strategic partnerships, including resellers, system integrators, industry associations, and synergistic service providers, in conjunction with the business development team.
- Drive the formation of strategic alliances, including capital partnerships and investments, in collaboration with the CEO.
- Enhance growth and monetization strategies.
- Design the legal and governance structure of the Japanese entity and oversee decision-making processes.
- Lead the design of capital policies and stock option plans within Japan.
- Redesign organizational structure, evaluation systems, and KPI frameworks.
- Establish governance systems and internal rules and regulations.
- Represent the Japanese organization in direct negotiations with the US headquarters and board of directors, bridging the gap between global policy localization and execution.
- Prepare monthly reports for domestic investors and manage regular meetings for investor relations (IR).
- Support business scaling by expanding revenue in the Japanese market from 500 million yen to 5 billion yen from an operational perspective.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience in a growth-stage startup in Japan, or practical field experience in a major Japanese company or consulting firm.
- Leadership capable of guiding cross-functional teams of 50+ people towards business goal achievement, with the ability to formulate clear policies and motivate everyone towards objectives.
- Management experience (5+ years): Experience in scaling organizations from scratch in startups or large corporations, or experience in driving cross-functional projects within a matrix organization.
- Ability to collaborate with engineering: Capacity for constructive dialogue with the business side, understanding technical constraints and development processes (an engineering background is not required, but respect for technology and manufacturing is essential).
- Conflict management: Ability to achieve consensus among strong leaders using logic and data.
- Experience in enterprise software/solutions business.
