About the Role

The practice of nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse involves performing tasks and responsibilities within the scope of supportive and restorative care, medication administration, and specialized tasks under the direction of a Registered Professional Nurse or licensed physician/dentist.

Responsibilities

Participates in the application of the nursing process to an assigned group of patients.
Demonstrates scientific knowledge, judgment, and technical skills of a Licensed Practical Nurse.
Performs job duties under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse.
Performs skilled nursing care tasks and procedures related to vital signs, pulse oximetry, venipuncture, starting standard peripheral IVs, urinary catheter insertion/care, simple dressings, and removing peripheral lines.
Administers IV fluids upon completion of annual competency training.
Monitors patients receiving blood products and TPN under the direction of the RN.
Makes recommendations in the application of the nursing process.
Administers direct patient care, including activities of daily living (ADL).
Performs point of care testing, including blood glucose.
Performs nursing procedures as defined in the nursing procedure manual.
Administers medication via all routes except IV push/bolus (excluding Normal Saline or heparin flush) or via a central line; does not administer chemotherapy or immunotherapy.
Administers subsequent doses of IV drugs after the RN has administered the first dose and assessed for side effects.
Participates in the development of other staff members.
Meets regulatory, licensure, and annual health assessment requirements.
Participates in patient care conferences.
Maintains nursing care standards through participation in workshops, in-service programs, and staff meetings.
Maintains competence through continuing education and other appropriate experiences.
Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families, and significant others.
Displays courtesy, professionalism, and respect during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community.
Responsible to the leadership person of the unit.
Provides direction, assistance, and support to auxiliary staff.
Participates in interdepartmental and intergroup communication to provide continuity of patient care.
Participates in departmental committees, as assigned.
Adheres to MSHS legal and ethical standards.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
Administers bolus of medications by IV push in a chronic outpatient hemodialysis treatment center, excluding first dose administration.
Identifies and sets up supplies necessary for accessing a CVAD.
Initiates treatment with a CVAD.
Draws blood specimens from a CVAD.
Performs CVAD dressing change and exit site care.
Monitors and adjusts flow rates of central venous catheter access device/line.
Intervenes if there is a catheter/blood line disconnection or other complications associated with a CVAD.
Provides CVAD care at the end of dialysis treatment.

Requirements

Completion of educational program for licensure as a LPN.
Successful completion of required New York State Department of Health LPN IV Therapy Initial Program for demonstration of competence in intravenous therapy/blood administration procedures.
Successful completion of annual unit-based review & update program in procedures associated with intravenous therapy.
Appropriate experience in a health care setting preferred.
