About the Role

VERSANT is seeking a Senior Counsel for its corporate Privacy Legal team. This role will provide product, privacy, and data protection advice across VERSANT's global businesses, products, and services, working with various teams from ideation through launch and operation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide product counseling across the lifecycle, partnering with business, product, technology, engineering, data, and other teams from ideation through development, launch, and ongoing operation of products, services, features, and initiatives.
  • Advise on a broad range of digital and consumer issues, including privacy and data protection, consumer protection, artificial intelligence, marketing, subscriptions, and other laws affecting digital products and services.
  • Translate legal requirements into business decisions by identifying meaningful legal and regulatory risks, explaining their practical impact, and developing workable solutions.
  • Support commercial matters by collaborating with other legal teams to review, draft, and negotiate data, privacy, and other terms impacting digital products.
  • Help the team scale by developing practical guidance, playbooks, training, and processes to ensure consistent, efficient, and useful legal support.
  • Stay current and help shape the team's approach by monitoring relevant legal, regulatory, and technology developments and adapting guidance as products, business models, and laws evolve.

Requirements

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in good standing in at least one U.S. state bar.
  • 7+ years of relevant legal experience, including meaningful experience counseling on product, technology, privacy, data, consumer, and related matters.
  • Excellent judgment and communication skills, including the ability to provide clear, practical advice to stakeholders at all levels, take ownership of matters, and know when to collaborate or escalate.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple matters and shifting priorities.
  • Willingness to dig into technology, products, business models, data flows, and subject matter that may be completely new.
