About the Role
This position provides daily supervision and support to patent and trademark paralegals firmwide, ensuring they meet the firm's goals through timely, high-quality work product and client service. The role involves managing and rebalancing caseloads, assessing performance, setting objectives, advising on policies, and collaborating on projects.
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of IP paralegals.
- Manage and rebalance paralegal caseloads based on skill, capacity, and urgency to ensure quality work and high utilization.
- Promote continuing education and skills advancement; provide training opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with ethical, procedural, and firm standards.
- Monitor and ensure patent and trademark paralegal work product is timely, accurate, and meets attorney and client needs.
- Manage complex workflows and cross-office coverage, track overtime, promote positive change, and take a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Provide day-to-day supervision, manage time and attendance, approve payroll and expenses, and conduct semi-annual check-ins with goal-setting.
- Provide employee relations support in collaboration with IP Leadership and Human Resources.
- Manage recruiting, hiring, and onboarding of patent and trademark paralegals.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in a law firm or in-house legal department.
- Experience leading in a supervisory/management role.
- Subject matter expertise in rules and procedures in multiple areas of intellectual property (e.g., patent, trademark, and copyright).
- Ability to supervise a team of 20+ paralegals, creating a positive working environment and leading by example.
- General management and leadership skills, including effective communication, interpersonal skills, strong organizational and problem-solving abilities, and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization.
- Outstanding customer service skills, professional demeanor, discretion, and flexibility.
- Ability to manage stressful situations calmly and professionally, anticipating conflicts and reaching satisfactory resolutions.
- High degree of sensitivity for confidential matters.
- Demonstrated ability to use MS Office products, specifically Excel and Word.
