About the Role
Core Platform is a platform team focused on making Charlie Health's other engineering teams faster, safer, and more consistent by building essential patterns, services, and guardrails. As the Principal Platform Engineer, you will be the technical lead for the AI-Native SDLC initiative, owning critical architecture decisions to enable automated quality checks and AI-driven efficiencies. Your goal is to improve velocity and safety by enhancing the development process and improving DORA metrics and engineering maturity.
Responsibilities
- Lead the AI-Native SDLC initiative, focusing on quality gates, test foundations, automated releases, and AI-assisted review, measured by DORA metrics.
- Own the team's roadmap and intake, balancing platform requests and developer pain with long-term architectural investment.
- Manage the team's delivery process, including planning, refinement, and cadence, with clearly scoped projects.
- Build authentication and authorization for the platform, including agent identity with audited credentials.
- Shape the gradual decomposition of the monolith into services by defining seams, migration patterns, and sequencing.
- Facilitate Architecture Advice Guild rituals and provide technical direction on architecture decision records.
- Improve plan authoring and agent orchestration, reviewing agent output with high rigor.
- Ensure the reliability of platform services through SLOs, monitor-gated deploys, incident leadership, and on-call rotation.
- Drive technical evaluations for platform vendors, including proofs of concept and build versus buy recommendations.
- Mentor Staff and Senior engineers to expand their scope of responsibility.
Requirements
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, including ownership of platform or distributed systems architecture at company scale.
- Designed, operated, and evolved systems that other teams build on.
- Hands-on experience leading a delivery engineering or developer productivity transformation (CI/CD, progressive delivery, test strategy at scale).
- Experience evolving a large monolith toward services incrementally and designing safe boundaries.
- Experience with agentic tooling ecosystems or agent orchestration for software development.
- A track record of technical leadership without people authority, aligning multiple teams behind architectural outcomes.
- Experience owning a team roadmap, including intake, prioritization, and delivery planning.
- Daily use of AI agents in the development workflow, including writing plans for agents and reviewing agent output.
- Experience integrating AI into a team's lifecycle beyond personal use.
- Proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript services, Postgres, and AWS.
- Comfort operating production critical-path systems, including on-call, in a regulated environment.
- Clear, direct communication with engineers, leadership, clinicians, and compliance.
