About the Role

City College of San Francisco is seeking full-time Institutional Police Officers to provide protection of life and property and enforce laws and college policies within the District's jurisdiction. This is a sworn unarmed department.

Responsibilities

  • Administers first aid to students, staff and/or visitors for the purpose of providing immediate emergency medical care.
  • Arrests individuals engaging in illegal activities for the purpose of apprehending suspects to prevent further illegal activities.
  • Collaborates with community agencies for the purpose of addressing individual cases and/or taking action regarding investigations, criminal activities, gang activities, vandalism, etc. for the safety and security of the college sites.
  • Communicates safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of such information, the potential consequences of violation, and building a community relationship.
  • Enforces applicable laws for the purpose of responding appropriately in accordance to federal, state, District, and municipal laws, rules, and policies.
  • Enforces college policies as necessary for the purpose of implementing campus Police Department processes and student code of conduct.
  • Escorts students, assigned personnel and/or visitors for the purpose of providing safety and providing site security.
  • Implements safety escorts for the purpose of ensuring safe movement on campus.
  • Investigates potential campus crimes and/or student related community incidents for the purpose of resolving conflicts, taking appropriate action, and/or referring to outside agency for resolution.
  • Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Patrols college facilities for the purpose of providing visibility, maintaining security, and deterring criminal activities.
  • Prepares a variety of documents for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Presents information in a variety of settings for the purpose of informing individuals of public safety, law enforcement procedures and individual rights.
  • Provides traffic and parking control for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lot/s.
  • Reports safety issues or concerns to maintenance department for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment, free of hazards.
  • Responds to a variety of situations for the purpose of making appropriate response and taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.
  • Responds calls for services from a variety of sources regarding campus security issues for the purpose of providing information, direction and/or referral for addressing inquiry.
  • Testifies in court proceedings for the purpose of providing information regarding alleged illegal activity.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination)
  • One (1) year of experience as a police officer, member of a military police unit or other work involving the safeguarding of life and property
  • Possession of a valid California Driver License
  • Possession of a Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate (issued by California Department of Justice, Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training) will be required prior to field work assignment and within twelve (12) months of hire date, as a condition of employment.
  • Must possess satisfactory hearing capabilities and visual acuity of at least 20/100 correctable to at least 20/30 in each eye.
  • Officers are required to wear police uniforms, a bullet proof vests, and required police gear.
  • Officers are required to work flexible shifts, rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Officers may be assigned to any of the district campuses under the department policy and/or at the discretion of the Chief of Police.
  • Must complete and pass an employment, character and background investigation.
  • Must complete a comprehensive personal history statement.
  • Candidates will be required to pass a polygraph test, a drug test and a psychological screening.
  • A review of judicial and driving records will be conducted.
  • Prior negligent operator probation, license suspension, drunk reckless, or hit and run driving, or multiple moving violations may be cause for disqualification, regardless of where they occurred.
  • At the time of application or thereafter, any type of vehicle-related probation, or driving without a valid license, or driving without insurance will disqualify.
  • Prior to appointment, candidates must be determined by a licensed physician to be free from any physical condition that would adversely affect the ability to perform the duties of a Peace Officer.
  • Candidates must pass a medical examination by a designated City physician and must meet minimum standards for hearing, color vision, visual acuity and other prescribed physical standards.
  • Must submit a complete application, ensuring the Employment History portion is filled out.
  • Must submit a cover letter expressing interest and indicating how minimum and desirable qualifications are met.
  • Must submit a current resume.
  • Must submit a copy of current California Driver’s License.
  • Must submit a copy of all relevant transcripts and certificates.
  • Must submit a current DMV printout with full and complete listing of all motor vehicle violations.
  • Falsifying one’s education, training, or work experience or attempted deception on the application may result in disqualification for this and future job opportunities with the City and County of San Francisco.

Work Type

Experience Level

  • One (1) year of experience as a police officer, member of a military police unit or other work involving the safeguarding of life and property
  • Two years of verifiable work experience (Desirable)
  • One year of law enforcement experience (Desirable)

Education Level

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination)
  • Completion of 60 units of college credits preferably in the Administration of Justice field (Desirable)

Salary/Compensations

  • $102,765 - $124,387 annually

Benefits

  • New employees hired on or after October 1, 2013 will contribute 2% of salary to the San Francisco Retiree Health Care Trust Fund (RHCTF).
  • Institutional Police positions in the San Francisco Community College District are eligible for membership in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
