About the Role

The New York Times is seeking an Operations Manager to join the Newsroom Operations team, supporting visual journalism and ensuring timely completion of daily operational tasks in a fast-paced news environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support editors during breaking news and timely news events, ensuring journalists have necessary resources.
  • Coordinate, plan, and execute culture-building activities both on and off site.
  • Manage and approve staff expenses in Workday, adhering to policy limits and correcting categorizations.
  • Manage work and vacation schedules, maintain accurate time banks in Workday, and verify with Payroll.
  • Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable for the department.
  • Act as a move coordinator, liaising with Facilities and other departments for desk moves/assignments.
  • Collaborate with HR and Recruiting teams on position management transactions.
  • Facilitate Workday management, including onboarding new employees and ensuring they receive necessary training, equipment, and information.
  • Purchase supplies and equipment, track departmental expenses including capital and outside vendor spending.
  • Utilize Zip for independent contractor onboarding, sourcing events, and purchasing.
  • Manage and pay freelancers and vendors.
  • Handle a variety of hands-on tasks including troubleshooting and assisting producers, visuals teams, and editors.
  • Manage the setup of departmental special events and on-site tasks.
  • Organize, prioritize, multitask, and work under deadline pressure.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of journalistic independence and the company's mission.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in an operational or administrative role.
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure and be accessible after hours or weekends as breaking news demands.
  • Professional judgment regarding detail and confidentiality.
  • High energy working style and optimistic attitude with a keen sense of urgency.
  • Ability to work professionally with all levels of management and staff.
  • Capacity to manage the diverse needs of a team of 100+ employees and leaders.
