About the Role
We are looking for an exceptional Staff Software Engineer to work on site with one of our largest customers, an AI robotics company. You will join our SDK and external APIs team, building on our platform and defining the technical vision for how advanced customers drive our robots programmatically. Your impact will be measured by production-level fixes that make it into our product and how your learnings shape the platform for all developers.
Responsibilities
- Define the technical vision for how advanced customers drive our robots programmatically, including realtime streaming control, the Python SDK, ROS 2 integration, and safety limits.
- Generalize learnings from on-site work into product capabilities with clear, stable interfaces, ensuring fixes and features are brought back into the product for all developers.
- Set the standard for reliability, safety, and observability of our external control surface.
- Act as the customer's technical point of contact and represent their needs within Engineering, converting observations into prioritized, testable requirements.
- Make clear decisions between immediate customer needs and long-term platform durability, documenting these trade-offs.
- Ship fixes and features across the stack, including TypeScript/Node services, Python SDK, ROS 2 adapter, and robot controller, taking them from reproduction to release.
- Root-cause complex problems in the field, such as realtime streaming faults, networking issues, and safety stops, and implement fixes, tests, and runbooks.
- Act as a technical multiplier by pairing with customer engineers to enhance their diagnostic and integration capabilities.
- Run weekly working sessions with customer engineers and contribute to monthly roadmap reviews with their leadership.
Requirements
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Experience owning a technical problem space end to end.
- Experience leading complex work across teams.
- Experience with a technical customer that runs its own engineering team.
- Ability to root-cause issues across a distributed system including Linux, containers, networking, logs, and timing, often with incomplete information.
- Experience working directly with demanding technical customers.
- Ability to decline requests and offer alternative roadmap paths.
- Proficiency in handling sensitive product information with care.
- Ability to write requirements, incident write-ups, and decisions that are actionable for both customer ML engineers and internal leadership.
- Fluency in Python and TypeScript/Node.js.
- Range across the rest of the stack including React, C++, and Kubernetes.
- Working knowledge of ROS 2 is preferred.
- Hands-on experience with robot control interfaces such as ROS 2, streaming or trajectory APIs, or motion control at 100 Hz and above is a plus.
- Familiarity with safety stops and collision handling is a plus.
- Ability to ramp quickly on a large existing codebase.
- Desire to spend most of the week at a customer site.
