About the Role
Additive manufacturing allows for rapid development from mechanical concepts to assembled, tested, and improved parts. This role focuses on developing printed robot parts and their manufacturing processes, involving CAD, print preparation, materials, tolerances, testing, and mechanical iteration. It's a hands-on position for individuals who enjoy diagnosing print or mechanism failures and enhancing subsequent versions.
Responsibilities
- Design and iterate mechanical parts for additive manufacturing.
- Prepare prints, evaluating orientation, supports, fit, strength, and material choices.
- Operate and maintain 3D printers and troubleshoot print failures.
- Measure parts, check tolerances, assemble prototypes, and test mechanical behavior.
- Compare print settings and designs using practical experiments.
- Document results and contribute to making successful parts and print processes repeatable.
Requirements
- Hands-on 3D printing experience with examples of mechanical parts created.
- CAD skills with an interest in mechanisms, materials, and manufacturing.
- Ability to troubleshoot print failures and analyze fit, strength, and tolerances.
- Patience with measurement and iteration, coupled with a drive for rapid building.
- Clear communication and meticulous documentation of results.
- Experience with functional robot parts, assemblies, or fixtures (nice to have).
- Experience testing different materials or improving print reliability (nice to have).
- Experience maintaining printers or managing multiple prints and revisions (nice to have).
