About the Role

The University of Rochester is seeking an individual to assist providers during exams and perform clinical tasks in outpatient clinics. This role involves technical, procedural, and information systems tasks to support patient comfort, care, and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Assists providers during exams, anticipating needs and adapting to patient complexity.
  • Attaches patients to diagnostic and medical equipment.
  • Provides information, comfort, and care to patients during exams, explaining next steps and status.
  • Ensures supplies and equipment are readily available for smooth operations and patient safety.
  • Escorts patients from waiting areas to exam areas and obtains vital signs.
  • Performs diagnostic testing and specimen collection per provider order, accurately labeling and processing specimens.
  • Enters patient data, condition, and care into the electronic medical record system.
  • Performs administrative duties, including scheduling and registration.
  • Maintains adequacy of clinical equipment and medical supply levels, including reordering, stocking, and cleaning.
  • Conducts inventory of supplies, rotates inventory, monitors expiration dates, and requisitions needed supplies.
  • Tracks supply utilization for cost trending and makes recommendations for cost reduction.
  • Solves problems with the purchasing department regarding back-ordered products.
  • Implements standard infection prevention measures, such as proper hand hygiene and contact/isolation precautions.
  • Monitors infection prevention practices for breaches and suggests corrections.
  • Precepts new employees to the area, providing an overview of requirements and ensuring competence.
  • May assist providers with patient processes as a surgical procedure assistant, preparing rooms and instrumentation.
  • Provides basic instruction to patients regarding procedures.
  • Anticipates provider needs during procedures, obtains additional instrumentation, prepares specimens, and dresses wounds.
  • Checks and calibrates equipment according to protocol.
  • Sets up sterile fields and preps instrument trays.
  • Sterilizes instruments.
  • Prepares specimens in appropriate preservative medium and labels them correctly.
  • Ensures accuracy for all requisitions and verifies specimen labeling and logging.
  • Reviews discharge instructions with patients.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1 year of experience in a customer-focused/service setting required.
  • Associate's degree preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience accepted.

Skills

  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical procedures preferred.
  • Computer experience preferred.
