About the Role
The University of Rochester is seeking a skilled professional to be responsible for all aspects of cardiovascular perfusion during adult and/or pediatric open heart surgery. This role requires a high degree of skill and judgment in operating and maintaining equipment, and an understanding of current perfusion techniques. The position also involves directing other healthcare personnel in the use of specialized equipment and assisting with research projects.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for all aspects of cardiovascular perfusion during adult and/or pediatric open heart surgery.
- Operates and maintains equipment, demonstrating an understanding of current perfusion techniques.
- Directs residents, interns, nursing personnel, and respiratory therapists in the use of ECMO and VAD equipment.
- Operates heart-lung machines, membrane oxygenators, Hemochron machines, and associated bypass circuit equipment.
- Operates equipment used in autotransfusion, ventricular assist devices, ECMO, centrifugal pumps, and blood gas analyzers.
- Operates the intra-aortic balloon pump.
- Chooses appropriate oxygenator and accessory equipment for each patient.
- Assembles, primes, and inspects the bypass circuit.
- Maintains sterile precautions during equipment use.
- Operates the heart-lung machine and keeps the surgeon informed of patient status.
- Maintains normal physiologic parameters during bypass.
- Recognizes, evaluates, and corrects emergency perfusion situations.
- Interprets lab data and takes appropriate action.
- Works with the surgeon and anesthesiologist to provide optimal patient care.
- Assists the surgeon with operative procedures.
- Assists other perfusionists with transporting blood gas samples, performing clotting studies, and administering cardioplegic solutions.
- Prepares antibiotics and other drugs used during bypass.
- Attends cardiac surgery conferences to review future patients.
- Evaluates new equipment in the surgical research laboratory and provides recommendations.
- Performs preventive maintenance, calibration, quality assurance, and cleaning of all equipment.
- Assists with research projects in the surgical research laboratory.
- Maintains records of all procedures.
- Inventories all items obtained from manufacturers, hospital stores, and pharmacy.
- Inventories, maintains, and prepares all graft tissue for implantation.
- Assumes on-call duties.
- Performs veno-venous bypass for liver transplantation.
- Performs extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), including transport of ECMO patients.
- Assists in the training of ECMO Specialists.
- Operates ventricular assist devices.
- Attends local and national medical meetings to stay aware of new perfusion methods and equipment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited perfusion program and completion of at least 40 cases as required by license.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
