About the Role
The Director of Buildings will provide on-site leadership for maintenance and housekeeping operations at the Families with Children facility in Bronx, NY. This role supports the Site Administrator and Associate Director of Facilities by ensuring prompt and effective facility management and serving as a liaison between the site, Central Buildings, vendors, and HFH leadership. Flexibility to work varying hours is required due to 24/7 facility operations.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and lead maintenance and housekeeping staff, including interviewing, hiring, scheduling, coaching, performance oversight, timekeeping, PTO, and payroll.
- Conduct regular inspections of the entire facility, including resident areas, common areas, exterior spaces, roof, mechanical and electrical rooms, and other building systems.
- Identify maintenance, safety, cleanliness, and building-condition issues and ensure repairs and preventive maintenance are completed in a timely manner.
- Maintain a strong working knowledge of general building systems, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, painting, windows, and related building components.
- Determine whether repairs require specialized vendor support and submit detailed vendor requests to the HFH Central Buildings Department.
- Work closely with Central Buildings and onsite vendors to facilitate repairs, monitor progress, address concerns, and verify completion of work.
- Meet regularly with leadership to review operations and escalate significant, recurring, or unresolved building issues.
- Maintain accurate records and trackers for inspections, repairs, work orders, staffing, building conditions, violations, and corrective actions.
- Assist with preparation for and participation in inspections involving DHS, OTDA, DOB, HPD, FDNY, DOH, and other applicable agencies.
- Help identify and resolve building violations and develop or implement corrective action plans (CAPs).
- Ensure maintenance and housekeeping operations comply with HFH policies and applicable NYC building, safety, health, and shelter requirements.
- Maintain inventory of maintenance, cleaning, sanitary, and other facility supplies and place orders as needed.
- Provide hands-on leadership and sound judgment to maintain a safe, clean, functional, and well-operated facility.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Commitment to HFH’s mission, vision, and values.
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in a relevant field.
- Minimum three (3) years in a supervisory operational role in a residential, shelter, commercial, or similar facility.
- Strong knowledge of general building systems and maintenance practices.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Computer skills, and experience with Microsoft 365.
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
