About the Role

NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is seeking a Laboratory Assistant for Histology to support the day-to-day operations of the laboratory by providing clinical, clerical, and inventory management support. This role is crucial for specimen management, ordering supplies, instrument maintenance, and communication with healthcare providers.

Responsibilities

  • Assist lab staff with daily laboratory operations, including clinical, clerical, and inventory management support.
  • Manage and process specimens.
  • Order and receive inventory.
  • Perform instrument maintenance.
  • Communicate with providers and other laboratories.
  • Assist the Pathology Department with daily maintenance, receipt and hand-off of bodies, record keeping, and morgue upkeep.
  • Maintain adequate supplies of general laboratory items and department-specific reagents.
  • Ensure proper receipt and storage of laboratory materials, documenting according to NYU policy and regulatory guidelines.
  • Perform front-end processing of samples, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, transport, and placing samples on automated test platforms.
  • Perform back-end processing of samples, including preparation for storage, tracking, and disposal.
  • Dispose of regulated medical, biological, chemical, and clean waste.
  • Clean laboratory work surfaces and assigned equipment according to protocols.
  • Maintain logs for temperature and humidity of equipment, work areas, and eye wash stations.
  • Review routine and stat pending lists and retrieve missed tests/specimens.
  • Answer the phone and provide assistance regarding specimen requirements, test availability, and turnaround times.
  • Access automated test platforms to assess sample status.
  • Assist with shipping of blood and body fluids to other sites.
  • Assist with inventory management of blood products, including receiving, stocking, and monitoring expiration dates.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Degree with 12 college credits in biology or chemistry.
  • Laboratory experience including handling open containers of blood and body fluid (accessioning/intake not included).
  • Knowledge of computer applications, especially Excel and Word.
  • Excellent communication skills.
