About the Role

The Laboratory Assistant - Histology - Full Time, Days position supports the day-to-day operations of the laboratory by providing clinical, clerical, and inventory management support. This role is crucial for specimen management, inventory control, instrument maintenance, and communication with healthcare providers and other laboratories. The position also assists the Pathology Department with morgue upkeep and record-keeping.

Responsibilities

  • Assist lab staff with daily laboratory operations, providing clinical, clerical, and inventory management support.
  • Manage specimen handling and processing.
  • Order and receive inventory.
  • Perform instrument maintenance.
  • Communicate with providers and other laboratories.
  • Assist the Pathology Department with daily maintenance, receipt of bodies, hand-off, record keeping, and morgue upkeep.
  • Maintain adequate supplies of general laboratory items and department-specific reagents.
  • Communicate supply needs to supervisor/manager.
  • Ensure proper receipt and storage of laboratory materials.
  • Receive all goods delivered and document according to NYU policy and regulatory guidelines.
  • Process all samples for analysis, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, transport, and placing samples on automated test platforms.
  • Perform back-end processing of samples, including preparation for storage, tracking, and disposal.
  • Dispose of regulated medical, biological, chemical, and clean waste.
  • Clean laboratory work surfaces and assigned equipment according to protocols.
  • Maintain logs for temperature and humidity of assigned equipment, work areas, and eye wash stations.
  • Review routine and stat pending lists and retrieve missed tests/specimens.
  • Answer the phone and provide assistance to callers regarding specimen requirements, test availability, and turnaround times.
  • Access automated test platforms to assess sample status.
  • Ship blood and body fluids to other sites.
  • Manage inventory of blood products, including receiving, stocking, and monitoring expiration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Degree with 12 college credits in biology or chemistry.
  • Laboratory experience including handling open containers of blood and body fluid (accessioning/intake not included).
  • Knowledge of computer applications, especially Excel and Word.
  • Excellent communication skills.
