About the Role

OpenAI is seeking an Applied Risk Standards Specialist to lead standards development for applied AI risks, including mental health, youth safety, age assurance, functional efficacy, reliability, and privacy. This role will translate internal research, safety policies, and evaluation methods into measurable standards to foster public trust and support responsible AI deployment. You will author proposals, negotiate requirements, and represent OpenAI in standards bodies, while also bringing emerging external requirements back into internal planning.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of applied AI risk standards, focusing on mental health, youth safety, age assurance, efficacy, reliability, and privacy risks, with an emphasis on evaluations and assessments.
  • Collaborate with technical owners to transform research, internal policies, and evaluation methods into credible test methods, assessment criteria, and standards based on real system behavior.
  • Integrate emerging requirements into internal planning and work with relevant teams to clarify implications for evaluations, controls, and product assurance.
  • Partner with technical and GRC teams on aspects such as assessor competence, independence, conflicts of interest, evidence access, reporting, and differentiating between management-system audits and technical evaluations.
  • Contribute to drafting, representation, and coordination for frontier risk-management and independent-assessment standards.
  • Lead assigned standards-body workstreams, negotiate proposals, and coordinate internal input to reduce the external engagement burden on technical experts.
  • Participate in relevant standards bodies such as ISO/IEC, INCITS, NIST consortium, and cross-industry initiatives.
  • Maintain clear records of approvals, negotiating positions, contributions, and implementation handoffs to ensure external commitments align with technical owners and available capacity.

Requirements

  • Technical depth in evaluation science, AI evaluations, red teaming, AI safety, or trust and safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate technical expertise into credible standards or assessment methods.
  • Experience authoring or significantly shaping standards, evaluation criteria, control frameworks, or normative technical contributions.
  • Ability to translate broad safety objectives into clear requirements and define evidence for meeting them.
  • Understanding of the distinctions between organizational risk-management processes, model and system evaluations, mitigation testing, and broader assurance claims.
  • Capacity to evaluate sensitive, context-dependent outcomes, including uncertainty and variation, without overstating assessment capabilities.
  • Understanding of how assessor competence, independence, incentives, and access impact assessment credibility.
  • Skill in building consensus while maintaining technical rigor, knowing when to compromise, challenge, or escalate decisions.
  • Ability to earn trust with technical teams while communicating effectively with legal, executive, policy, and external standards participants.
  • Proficiency in precise writing, exercising discretion, and independently managing workstreams from proposal to handoff.
