About the Role
Glynwood’s Advanced Vegetable Apprenticeship Program is an intensive vocational training program designed for individuals with full-time commercial farm experience who are ready to advance their vegetable farming knowledge. The program provides a comprehensive overview of managing a small commercial vegetable operation using both low-till and traditional tillage methods, covering everything from tractor operation to business planning.
Responsibilities
- Work full-time in the fields as a member of the vegetable crew, integral to planting, crop care, and sales.
- Gain hands-on experience and learn technical skills as field crew.
- Receive extensive in-field training in farm management and decision making.
- Complete assessments of skills and progress towards program goals.
- Participate in a 60-hour classroom curriculum.
- Support Glynwood’s culture of philanthropy, potentially contributing to story-telling projects or events.
- Participate in the vegetable team’s weekend chore rotation (greenhouse care, field irrigation, fertigation).
- Participate in field trips off-site and potentially attend conferences requiring overnight stays.
- Engage in weekly field walks and task planning/prioritization.
- Rotate through responsibilities such as greenhouse management, tractor maintenance, record keeping, and irrigating.
- Visit regional farms as part of the Mid-Hudson Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training (CRAFT).
- Utilize alumni network and organizational contacts for networking assistance.
- Perform greenhouse seeding and management.
- Perform transplanting and direct seeding.
- Perform hand weeding, hoeing, and other weed management tasks.
- Perform harvesting.
- Perform washing and packing.
- Perform cover cropping.
- Perform mulching.
- Perform pruning and trellising.
- Perform irrigating.
- Perform pest and disease control.
- Perform field tractor work.
- Perform record keeping.
- Supervise CSA pickups.
- Perform compost making.
- Perform machine and tool maintenance.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Must have worked at least one full season (5 consecutive months) on a commercial vegetable operation.
- Valid US Driver’s License in good standing.
- COVID-19 vaccination.
- Basic competency with the Google Suite, including word processing, spreadsheets, email, and calendar.
- Ability to communicate clearly in English, verbally and in writing.
- Professional, collegial, direct and non-aggressive communication skills.
- Capable of both working alone and on a team.
- Able and willing to stand, crouch, kneel, and bend for extended periods doing repetitive tasks.
- Able and willing to lift and move harvest bins, rock bags, materials, hoses, etc. up to 50lbs at a time on a regular basis.
- Able and willing to perform other physical activities as needed for producing vegetables.
- Able and willing to work steadily outdoors in all weather including heat, cold, rain, and wind (excluding hazardous conditions).

- Glynwood's vegetable operation is certified organic and produces over 60 vegetable crops on 5 acres for its CSA, farm store, and food access partners.
