About the Role
The Child Care Shift Supervisor has overall shift responsibility for providing a safe, therapeutic, and culturally sensitive environment for children in residential care. This position requires critical thinking, advanced child care skills, and the ability to assess and respond appropriately to stressful situations.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and guidance to child care staff.
- Meet with staff on shift individually biweekly to provide feedback on job performance.
- Identify and address issues related to maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment, taking corrective action and informing Program Supervisors.
- Provide assistance and guidance to other child care staff regarding effective program management.
- Participate in the supervision of child care staff.
- Ensure child care workers adhere to program routine and follow individual treatment, supervision, and crisis intervention plans.
- Ensure supervision of children in accordance with individual enhanced supervision plans, program protocol, and agency policies.
- Participate in professional development trainings.
- Chair daily pre-shift meetings to plan daily activities including recreation, visitation, transportation, and medication management.
- Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings and biweekly supervision, contributing to meeting agendas.
- Ensure completion of all written documentation as defined by program and agency policy.
- Ensure adherence to all program and agency policies and procedures.
- Ensure medication is passed according to agency policy.
- Ensure meals and snacks are prepared and served as scheduled.
- Successfully complete all required agency trainings.
- Ensure compliance with labor standards regarding staff breaks and management of additional hours.
- Coordinate intakes and referrals into the transitional services program.
- Perform other related tasks and duties as assigned by supervisor.
Requirements
- Minimum high school or equivalency diploma required.
- Some higher education preferred.
- Experience working with juvenile justice involved youth highly desirable.
- Sufficient maturity to work with and relate to youth required.
- Commitment to following and embracing the Seven Commitments of the Sanctuary Model.
- Ability to form positive relationships with youth.
- Ability to understand and respond to youth’s basic developmental needs.
- Ability to understand and follow agency policy and Trauma Informed Care orientation.
- Ability to role model and teach appropriate behavior to youth.
- Understanding of basic needs and developmental issues of youth to promote growth and respect individuality.
- Asks age and developmentally appropriate questions and actively listens to youth's responses.
- Develops a warm, positive, nurturing relationship with each youth.
- Follows mandated reporting requirements regarding child abuse and neglect.
- Practices infection control, including appropriate hand washing procedures.
- Uses knowledge of developmental milestones to assist youth in participating at their individual level of interest and ability.
- Uses observation to understand youth interests and developmental levels.
- Interacts with youth during meal and snack times, promoting appropriate social behavior.
- Applies knowledge of youth development to plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities and environments.
- Adapts activities and environments to meet the special needs and situations of individual youth.
- Identifies developmentally appropriate behavior and reasonable expectations for youth’s behavior.
- Demonstrates a high level of professionalism at all times.
- Demonstrates ability to provide leadership for staff.
- Demonstrates ability to critically think and respond appropriately to stressful situations.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Valid New York State Driver License.
