About the Role

The Medical Assistant II provides clinical office support to physicians and surgeons, performing patient care and administrative duties to ensure quality patient care. This role also involves mentoring and assisting less experienced staff members.

Responsibilities

Perform venipuncture and/or EKGs, check schedules, and organize patient flow.
Accompany patients to exam/procedure rooms and assist with walking, transferring, and dressing.
Collect and process specimens and perform point-of-care testing.
Prepare patients for examinations.
Assist physicians with various procedures.
Take vital signs and relay instructions to patients and families.
Answer calls and provide pertinent information.
Send and receive patient medical records.
Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
Complete and file forms and requisitions.
Manage charts to ensure information is complete and filed appropriately.
Enter orders into the electronic medical record (EMR) system or prepare prescription refill requests for physician review.
Inventory, order, and restock medical supplies.
Set up examination rooms and instruments using proper sterilization techniques.
Maintain logging systems for refrigeration of medications, point-of-care testing, sterilization processes, and crash carts.
Check expiration dates on medications and medical supplies and dispose of them appropriately.
Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards, procedures, and legal regulations.
Comply with personal protective equipment requirements for protection against exposure to blood, body fluids, disinfectants, radiation, and other hazardous substances.
Assist in the maintenance of medical charts, including filing, operative reports, test results, and home care forms.
Schedule surgeries/procedures or verify times with patients and prepare necessary forms.
Perform proficient phlebotomy duties.
Perform appointment scheduling and registration, and update patient demographic and insurance information.
Maintain, adjust, and confirm patient office schedules.
Check and verify insurance information using internal or web sources.
Perform and verify pre-certification for procedures.
Provide training and mentoring to Level I MA staff.
Direct and assign MA schedules and workflow to meet practice needs and patient volumes.
Oversee the successful delivery of clinical office support to meet physician needs.
Perform other duties and tasks as required.

Requirements

High School Diploma/GED with completion of a Training Certificate from an approved Medical Assistant certificate course.
Certified Medical Assistant preferred.
2+ years of experience as a Medical Assistant.
For in-house candidates, promotion to Level II is contingent upon consistent E or S annual performance appraisals.
BCLS certification required (AHA).
