About the Role
Chelsea Piers is seeking a Lead Building Engineer to manage the physical plant operations at their iconic sports and entertainment complex. This role offers a unique opportunity for career growth within a stable, single-location environment, reporting directly to the Chief Engineer and supervising another Building Engineer.
Responsibilities
- Lead daily operations, directing maintenance activity and supervising the Building Engineer's tasks and schedule.
- Manage principal mechanical systems including HVAC, ice rink chiller plant, pools, ejector pits, elevators, dehumidification systems, walk-ins, steam rooms, and saunas.
- Serve as the primary contact for mechanical issues, ensuring rapid resolution with minimal disruption.
- Oversee MEP vendors and service contracts, managing them within budget and ensuring quality.
- Coordinate projects by building and managing task lists, prioritizing work orders with the Chief Engineer.
- Deliver daily activity reports on mechanical issues and operations to the Chief Engineer.
- Conduct regular inspections and drive safety improvements across the facility.
Requirements
- 7+ years of commercial facilities experience.
- Experience maintaining chillers, boilers, cooling towers, air handlers, RTUs, VAV systems, and hydronic heating/cooling.
- Hands-on HVAC diagnostics and performance optimization skills.
- Proficiency with BAS/BMS controls and preventive maintenance programs.
- Experience maintaining large, occupied facilities.
- Firm understanding of all building systems (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, fire protection, etc.).
- Ability to read technical plans.
- Must have or obtain EPA 608 certification.
- Must have or obtain FDNY Certificates of Fitness (e.g., S12, S13).
- Must have or obtain Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification.
- Prior supervisory or lead experience preferred.
- Flexible availability, including weekends, holidays, and various shifts.

- $115-145K+ annual take-home (including overtime)
