About the Role
The Head of Casualty is responsible for developing and executing strategic and tactical business plans that advance the Wholesale strategy, strengthen underwriting performance, improve governance and operational controls, and drive profitable growth. This leader brings deep knowledge of Primary and Excess Casualty lines of business and translates financial, market, and operational insights into a clear strategy for internal teams, field leaders, brokers, and external stakeholders. The role also leads a portfolio of strategic initiatives, including technology transformation efforts, that build new capabilities, improve productivity, and position the business for its next phase of growth.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute strategic and tactical business plans that support Wholesale priorities and profitable growth objectives.
- Translate deep understanding of Wholesale lines of business into a clearly articulated strategy for internal teams and external audiences.
- Lead business case development, project execution, and delivery for strategic initiatives aligned to the Wholesale strategy.
- Analyze financial performance across each line of business, identify trends, and use insights to shape future strategy.
- Review countrywide results to evaluate field execution and recommend or implement corrective actions as needed.
- Develop recommendations that improve profitability, productivity, governance, and operational control effectiveness.
- Partner with Field Leadership to understand marketplace trends, broker dynamics, customer needs, and competitive pressures.
- Anticipate customer needs and recommend proactive actions related to product, appetite, process, and go-to-market strategy.
- Maintain a strong external focus to ensure business strategies remain market-relevant and customer-centered.
- Lead technology transformation and capability-building initiatives that support the Wholesale strategy and strengthen the business model.
- Drive disciplined execution, pace, and accountability to prove out new capabilities and accelerate business outcomes.
- Apply a continuous improvement mindset to simplify processes, improve operational controls, and increase productivity.
- Build and lead results-oriented, high-performing teams with clear priorities, accountabilities, and performance expectations.
- Lead cross-functional teams through thought leadership, collaboration, bias for action, and strong enterprise partnership.
- Influence stakeholders at all levels to align around strategic priorities, solve complex problems, and deliver enterprise value as well as customer value.
Requirements
- 15+ years of progressive underwriting leadership experience across Excess and/or Primary Casualty; E&S and admitted market experience strongly valued.
- Demonstrated success leading large underwriting portfolios with P&L accountability and strong financial outcomes.
- Proven experience operating as a senior business leader with accountability for strategy, financial performance, talent, operations, governance, and execution across a complex business.
- Demonstrated ability to lead through transformation, including operating model redesign, technology adoption, workflow simplification, and change leadership.
- Strong commercial orientation with the ability to identify growth opportunities, evaluate market dynamics, and make disciplined trade-offs across profitability, risk, and scale.
- Strong market presence and credibility with brokers, senior leaders, and cross‑functional partners.
- Track record of building, developing, and retaining top underwriting talent while preparing successors for critical roles.
- Sound judgment, high ethical standards, and the ability to make complex decisions with incomplete information.
- Executive‑level communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate strategy, priorities, and expectations.
