Responsibilities

  • Evaluates new products, procedures, and equipment.
  • Anticipates and recommends the need for new equipment and procedures.
  • Evaluates, implements, and monitors workflow changes to enhance laboratory performance.
  • Participates in pre and post-analytical workflow development.
  • Sets priorities, assesses responsibilities, and establishes timetables for the section.
  • Keeps the Laboratory manual current for their department.
  • Organizes and monitors daily operations for the section.
  • Monitors staff attendance, personality, and dress code, taking appropriate action.
  • Monitors safety and infection control compliance and corrects issues.
  • Assists in the development of job descriptions, competency assessments, and evaluations.
  • Develops work schedules and assignments, monitoring compliance for adequate coverage.
  • Assists in the selection and interviewing of prospective employees.
  • Counsels personnel in accordance with job descriptions, hospital policy, and current standards.
  • Assists in the resolution of personnel issues.
  • Communicates effectively with staff.
  • Attends HR-related meetings and training sessions.
  • Monitors all expenditures to ensure efficient financial resource utilization.
  • Maintains proper inventory to minimize outdating while ensuring adequate supplies.
  • Evaluates the quality and cost-effectiveness of new or replacement supplies, equipment, and procedures.
  • Seeks new means to meet budget objectives.
  • Evaluates staffing needs and organizes schedules to minimize additional coverage or overtime.
  • Functions as a section resource in resolving difficult and complex problems, troubleshooting procedures and equipment.
  • Maintains, reviews, and updates all manuals, documents, and procedures in a timely fashion.
  • Establishes, maintains, and documents a preventative maintenance program for equipment, instruments, and reagents.
  • Recognizes malfunctions and takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Establishes, maintains, and monitors a comprehensive quality control program to ensure accuracy and validity of results.
  • Takes appropriate corrective action as necessary for quality control.
  • Ensures procedures are performed according to established protocols.
  • Reviews and assesses results for accuracy and validity.
  • Organizes and maintains section statistics, records, and computer files.
  • Monitors receipt of proficiency test specimens, integrates them into workflow, and completes questionnaires.
  • Reviews proficiency survey results and takes corrective action when indicated.
  • Assumes administrative responsibility for the entire laboratory when necessary.
  • Participates in Hospital and Departmental P.I. programs.
  • Participates in related hospital committees as requested.
  • Completes all reports, appraisals, and training guides in a timely fashion.
  • Organizes work and uses time effectively.
  • Directs the training of new employees and medical technology students, evaluating their progress.
  • Provides and encourages ongoing continuing education for employees.
  • Maintains current knowledge of the field through professional organizations, seminars, and literature.
  • Functions as a resource and liaison with other medical professionals.
  • Provides effective preceptorship to new personnel and students.
  • Encourages staff participation in the evaluation of new products and methods.
  • Demonstrates leadership qualities and supports colleague development.
  • Develops and maintains cooperative working relationships with physicians and patient care departments.
  • Steps in to work in the department as a working technologist or phlebotomist when necessary.
  • Keeps Administrative Director and other personnel informed of changes in procedure, policy, or technique.
  • Ensures all safety requirements are met and reports issues.
  • Attends required management meetings and participates in resolving laboratory services issues.
  • Utilizes good judgment in handling situations not covered by instructions.
  • Exhibits flexibility and openness to change.
  • Maintains a consistent pattern of attendance.
  • Reports to assigned area on time for scheduled shifts.
  • Adheres to hospital/department dress code.
  • Completes all hospital requirements at designated times.
  • Conforms to policies regarding confidentiality of information.
  • Follows call-in procedures when sick, late, or absent.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Medical Technology or related fields.
  • Six years progressive experience in laboratory medicine.
  • Analytical skills necessary to develop procedures and resolve complex technical problems.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to direct and assign work to subordinates at several levels.
  • Strong instrumentation and computer background as appropriate.
  • Ability to manage staff, schedules, inventory, and Human Resources issues.

  • $67,579.33 - $114,683.29 Annually
