About the Role
Assists in the implementation of the nursing process by performing direct and indirect patient care to assigned patients under the supervision of the Registered Professional Nurse. Assists in maintaining an orderly and safe patient care environment and unit.
Responsibilities
- Assists with Admission/Transfer/Discharge of patients, including orienting patients, safeguarding property, and preparing bedside units.
- Conducts patient rounds for toileting, positioning, comfort, safety, and personal needs, responding promptly to call lights.
- Assembles O2 and suction set-ups.
- Provides basic hygiene to patients, including bathing, mouth care, and assisting with bedpans.
- Prepares patients for meals, including positioning and assisting with feeding.
- Performs and/or assists patients with simple treatments, such as removing and reapplying SCD wraps and assisting with enemas.
- Collects specimens as directed by the RN.
- Informs the RN of any audible clinical alarms.
- Assists with moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting of patients.
- Assists with removal and security of patient personal items prior to procedures.
- Changes linen in accordance with policy and as necessary.
- Takes and electronically records vital signs and reports abnormalities to the RN.
- Weighs patients and electronically records the weight.
- Measures and records oral intake, urinary output, bowel elimination, and drainage, calculating totals and emptying drainage bags.
- Performs post mortem care.
- Performs safety observations for patients on continuous observation or in restraints.
- Reports any observed changes in the patient's condition to the RN.
- Responds to and meets patient/family needs and customer concerns with compassion and understanding, establishing caring relationships.
- Maintains competence through in-service and educational programs.
- Attends staff meetings and reviews minutes of meetings not attended.
- Maintains a safe and uncluttered environment of care in patient rooms.
- Assists with supply and equipment management of patient, procedure, and supply rooms.
- Maintains cleanliness of utility rooms and pantries.
- Performs other duties such as errands, relieving other units, bringing stretchers, and assisting other members of the health team.
- Performs other duties as aligned with the mission and values of the organization.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Graduate of Certified Nursing Attendant program or minimum 6 months relevant experience.
- BLS or Heartsaver CPR/AED certification (Issued by the American Heart Association-AHA) is required upon entry to the position.
- Working knowledge of English is evident in verbal, reading and writing abilities; other language an asset.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
