About the Role

Perform various clinical laboratory tests in one or more sections of the Laboratory Department to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of disease. Analyze and interpret test results, ensuring accuracy. Repeat tests as necessary, especially those yielding abnormal or atypical results, and notify appropriate personnel.

Responsibilities

Applies a basic level of knowledge of methods and clinical relevance of tests performed.
Performs all preventive maintenance on schedule.
Recognizes abnormal instrument or test performance and does not release patient results until corrected.
Performs basic troubleshooting procedures and seeks assistance when necessary.
Monitors reagent and supply inventory and informs supervisor of needs.
Works effectively in high-pressure situations, processing a high volume of work without losing composure or making mistakes.
Organizes work effectively for seamless handover to colleagues.
Verifies and processes specimens in an organized and timely manner.
Performs phlebotomy with expertise when required.
Follows all procedures accurately.
Performs all test procedures accurately.
Performs Quality Control according to Laboratory protocol.
Documents Quality Control and corrective actions.
Follows laboratory procedure when Q.C. fails.
Assures results are accurate by applying knowledge of test interrelationships.
Communicates clearly and concisely.
Listens attentively and follows directions.
Demonstrates proper telephone techniques and etiquette.
Effectively utilizes the computer to process specimens, report results, and access information.
Communicates ideas and suggestions with a positive intent.

Calls critical values to the designated contact person and records them.

Uses all available resources to solve problems, including manuals and manufacturers' technical services.
Displays knowledge of mathematical and statistical calculations to evaluate Quality Control and calculate patient results.
Maintains a consistent pattern of attendance.
Reports to assigned area on time for scheduled shift.
Adheres to hospital/department dress code, arriving to work appropriately dressed, well-groomed, and neat.
Completes all hospital requirements at designated times (e.g., annual assessments, educational, MedNetTra).
Conforms to policies regarding confidentiality of information.
Follows call-in procedure when sick, late, or absent.

Requirements

BS in Medical Technology which includes a clinical internship or BS in a related discipline with one year supervised clinical laboratory experience.
NYS Education Department Clinical Laboratory Technologist License or Eligible.
Analytical skills necessary to analyze data and perform mathematical calculations.
Basic knowledge of computer fundamentals and experience with laboratory information systems.
Technical skills necessary to operate, maintain and troubleshoot instrumentation and perform routine and complex testing.
Effectively communicates detailed data and procedures.
Works effectively in high-pressure situations.
