About the Role
Perform various clinical laboratory tests in one or more sections of the Laboratory Department to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of disease. Analyze and interpret test results, ensuring accuracy, and notify appropriate personnel of abnormal findings.
Responsibilities
- Apply basic knowledge of methods and clinical relevance of tests performed.
- Perform all preventive maintenance on schedule.
- Recognize abnormal instrument or test performance and do not release patient results until corrected.
- Perform basic troubleshooting procedures and seek assistance when necessary.
- Monitor reagent and supply inventory and inform supervisor of needs.
- Work effectively in high-pressure situations and process a high volume of work without losing composure.
- Organize work effectively for collaboration and handover.
- Verify and process specimens in an organized and timely manner.
- Perform phlebotomy when required with expertise.
- Follow all procedures accurately.
- Perform all test procedures accurately.
- Perform Quality Control according to Laboratory protocol.
- Document Quality Control and corrective actions.
- Follow laboratory procedure when Q.C. fails.
- Assure results are accurate by applying knowledge of test interrelationships.
- Communicate clearly and concisely.
- Listen attentively and follow directions.
- Demonstrate proper telephone techniques and etiquette.
- Effectively utilize the computer to process specimens, report results, and access information.
- Communicate ideas and suggestions with a positive intent.
- Convey respect for the profession and act in a professional manner.

- Communicate knowledge and demonstrate procedures effectively to coworkers and students.
- Call critical values to the designated contact person and record them.
- Follow computer downtime procedures.
- Utilize technical communication (procedure manual etc.) in the performance of duties.
- Analyze problems to determine the cause and find solutions.
- Follow a logical process to problem resolution.
- Use all available resources to solve problems, including manuals and manufacturers' technical services.
- Evaluate Quality Control and calculate patient results using mathematical and statistical calculations.
- Maintain a consistent pattern of attendance.
- Report to assigned area on time for scheduled shift.
- Adhere to hospital/department dress code.
- Complete all hospital requirements at designated times.
- Conform to policies regarding confidentiality of information.
- Follow call-in procedure when sick, late, or absent.
Requirements
- BS in Medical Technology which includes a clinical internship or BS in a related discipline with one year supervised clinical laboratory experience.
- NYS Education Department Clinical Laboratory Technologist License or Eligible.
- Analytical skills necessary to analyze data and perform mathematical calculations.
- Basic knowledge of computer fundamentals and experience with laboratory information systems.
- Technical skills necessary to operate, maintain and troubleshoot instrumentation and perform routine and complex testing.
- Effectively communicates detailed data and procedures.
- Works effectively in high-pressure situations.
