About the Role

Assists in the implementation of the nursing process by performing direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse. Contributes to maintaining an orderly and safe patient care environment and unit.

Responsibilities

Assists with patient admission, transfer, and discharge, including orienting patients, preparing belongings, and ensuring patient comfort and safety.
Conducts patient rounds for toileting, positioning, comfort, safety, and personal needs, responding promptly to call lights.
Assembles oxygen and suction setups.
Provides basic patient hygiene, including bathing, AM/PM care, mouth care, hair care, nail and foot care, shaving, and assisting with bedpans and urinals.
Prepares patients for meals, including clearing tables, positioning patients, assisting with food, and feeding patients.
Performs and assists with simple treatments, including removing and reapplying SCD wraps and assisting with enema procedures.
Collects specimens as directed by the RN.
Informs the RN of any audible clinical alarms.
Assists with moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients.
Assists with the removal and security of patient personal items prior to procedures.
Changes linen in accordance with policy and as necessary.
Takes and electronically records vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, pulse oximetry, respiration) and reports abnormalities to the RN.
Weighs patients and electronically records weight on admission or as directed.
Measures and records oral intake, urinary output, bowel elimination, and drainage, calculating totals and emptying drainage bags.
Performs post-mortem care.
Performs safety observations for patients requiring continuous observation or in restraints.
Reports any observed changes in patient condition to the RN.
Responds to patient/family needs and concerns with compassion and understanding, establishing caring relationships with staff, patients, and families.
Maintains competence through in-service and educational programs.
Attends staff meetings and reviews minutes of meetings not attended.
Maintains a safe and uncluttered environment of care in patient rooms and assists with supply and equipment management.
Maintains cleanliness of utility rooms and pantries.
Performs other duties such as errands, relieving other units, bringing stretchers, and assisting other members of the health team.
Discusses personal or unit-based educational goals/plans with the Nurse Manager and/or Nursing Professional Development Specialist.
Demonstrates accountability for supplies, equipment, and environmental support.
Assists in the collection of data for the unit's Quality and Performance Improvement Program.
Provides instruction and demonstrates desired skills to NAs before they undertake new tasks.
Shares feedback with NAs regarding areas for development.
Performs other duties aligned with the mission and values of the organization.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Graduate of Certified Nursing Attendant Program.
Certified as a CNA.
At least 6 months of relevant experience.
BLS or Heartsaver CPR/AED certification (Issued by the American Heart Association-AHA) is required upon entry to the position.
Working knowledge of English is evident in verbal, reading and writing abilities.
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
