About the Role

As a Collector, you will play an important role in helping members find practical solutions while managing delinquent accounts with professionalism, empathy, and sound judgment. This is a hands-on role that combines member service, problem-solving, financial administration, and regulatory compliance, offering the opportunity to make a meaningful difference for both members and the credit union.

Responsibilities

  • Contact distressed members to determine their hardship and ability to pay.
  • Counsel members on available alternatives to eliminate delinquency.
  • Perform general collection duties including deferments and payment postings.
  • Negotiate appropriate short-term payment arrangements.
  • Provide status updates to members.
  • Place outbound and receive inbound calls.
  • Record all collection efforts accurately in the collection system.
  • Conduct research to support collection efforts.
  • Discuss accounts requiring actions beyond routine procedures with the Collections Manager.
  • Escalate calls and problem accounts for repossession, legal action, or collection agencies.
  • Recommend accounts for write-off as uncollectable.
  • Process collection checks.
  • Assist with correspondence related to vendor relationships.
  • Handle bankruptcy referrals and perform account maintenance.
  • Recommend changes to improve workflow, efficiency, and accuracy within the Collection Department.
  • Distribute, process, and send all Collections department mail and correspondence daily.
  • Process and monitor iBanking transactions and requests related to Collections.
  • Monitor and assist with monthly General Ledger (GL) Reconciliation.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Some college preferred.
  • Two to three years of experience in collections or a comparable combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of collection process and applicable regulations.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) requirements.
  • Experience using P.C. based software including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to always project a professional appearance and positive attitude.
