About the Role
The Europe and Central Asia (“ECA”) Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a student to intern in the Berlin office. The internship focuses on human rights and rule of law issues across Europe and the post-Soviet space, providing a strong understanding of the division's work.
Responsibilities
- Conduct background desk research, draft research and advocacy materials, and monitor and analyze political, legal, and human rights developments across the region.
- Assist with preparing briefings and support outreach to government officials, diplomats, journalists, and civil society partners.
- Participate in meetings, attend external events, and contribute to rapid-response research, depending on ongoing projects.
- Undertake other related assignments that match the intern's interests.
- Attend lectures, trainings, professional development workshops, and special events relating to human rights.
- Network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees.
- Apply university-acquired skills and social commitment in a professional setting.
Requirements
- Must be an enrolled student for the duration of the internship term.
- Must be eligible for a pflichtpraktikum (mandatory internship related to studies).
- Strong knowledge of the workings of EU institutions and their policies.
- Relevant coursework focusing on the EU, Eastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine, Central Asia, Turkey, human rights, or international law is strongly encouraged.
- Strong writing and research skills.
- Previous experience in EU policy, human rights, or in countries of the region is highly desirable.
- Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing English is essential.
- Speaking, reading, and writing skills in German are desirable.
- Well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable with a strong interest in human rights.
- Computer skills (Microsoft Office, internet applications) are required.
- Must possess valid work authorization in Germany for the duration of the internship.
