About the Role
The Appeals Division of the New York City Law Department is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel. This division litigates appeals across various practice areas and prepares amicus briefs, offering a unique opportunity to engage in high-level appellate practice that shapes legal developments impacting the City.
Responsibilities
- Litigate appeals arising from nearly all of the Law Department’s practice areas.
- Prepare amicus briefs in matters affecting the City’s interests.
- Practice before both federal and state appellate courts.
- Brief and argue a broad range of cases, from routine municipal matters to complex appeals presenting cutting-edge legal issues and significant questions of public policy.
- Handle a substantial number of appeals each year, working independently and collaboratively.
Requirements
- Must have graduated from an ABA accredited law school.
- Must be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar or be in the process of admission.
- Demonstrate excellent writing, research, and analytical skills.
- Exceptional candidates committed to public service and capable of tackling challenging legal work.

- For 0–5 years of legal experience: $87,737-$122,300
- For 5-10 years of legal experience: $122,300-$137,188
- For 10-15 years of legal experience: $137,188-$159,521
- For 15-20 years of legal experience: $159,521-$180,791
- For 20+ years of legal experience: $180,791-$188,235
- Candidates with highly specialized experience may qualify for salaries slightly above these ranges.
