About the Role
The Police Surgeon will primarily determine the fitness for duty of uniformed members of service. Additional duties include following members' course of treatment and authorizing medical services for line of duty injuries, responding to hospitalized members of the service who are injured in the line of duty or seriously ill, participating in Department health fairs and other medical initiatives, providing consults in his/her area of medical expertise, engaging in Department research activities, providing expert testimony as needed, and participating in all cause disaster drills.

Requirements
- Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York plus valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the Department.

- All medical, psychological, drug screening, counselling and professional services, medical records, medical bills, Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), line of duty prescriptions, and disability applications are processed through the Medical Division.
- The Medical Division also conducts internal investigations to preserve and protect the integrity of the Department's sick leave protocols and the disability retirement system.
- In addition, the medical Division's Occupational Health Assessment and Wellness Unit provides medical, educational., and nutritional counselling to members of the service and deploys a Mobile Health Vehicle that visits commands throughout the five boroughs.
