About the Role
AXA Commercial is seeking a Climate Change Analyst specializing in atmospheric perils and climate change to support risk assessment and model development. This role involves analyzing catastrophe models, translating scientific research into insurance solutions, and contributing to scientific research and model validation.
Responsibilities
- Support analytical reviews and validation of catastrophe models focusing on atmospheric perils and climate change impacts.
- Develop and refine multiple risk assessment techniques for catastrophe risk quantification.
- Translate external scientific research into actionable practices, product development, and risk management strategies.
- Conduct independent scientific research aligned with AXA UK’s business interests and risk profile.
- Manage small research projects from initiation to completion, collaborating with internal teams and external partners.
- Foster relationships with academia and external partners, managing research activities and collaborative projects.
- Communicate technical analysis, scientific findings, and their impact clearly to insurance professionals and senior leadership.
- Collaborate closely with the second line Risk teams to ensure exposure inputs and outputs of catastrophe models are accurate, validated, and aligned with risk management strategies.
- Contribute to the ongoing development, refinement, and validation of AXA’s internal catastrophe models, including reinsurance and accumulation controls.
- Work with the Reinsurance team to generate insights for portfolio management, pricing, and reinsurance optimisation.
Requirements
- PhD in a scientific discipline with expert knowledge of atmospheric perils, climate change, and catastrophe risk.
- Strong programming, scripting, and data analysis skills in Python, R, or similar tools.
- Extensive experience in risk modelling, validation, and critique of catastrophe models, with an understanding of model components and modules.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of producing reports, presentations, and conveying complex scientific concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Proven ability to manage small research projects independently and deliver results on time.
- Strong network-building skills, with a history of fostering collaborations with academia, external partners, and internal teams.
- In-depth understanding of current and emerging risks in the insurance sector, including exposure management, underwriting, and pricing practices.
- Knowledge of reinsurance, capital modelling, and how catastrophe risk influences pricing and portfolio decisions.
- Willingness to undertake projects outside immediate expertise and to facilitate scientific alignment across industry and academia.
- Eligible and authorised to work in the United Kingdom.
