About the Role
The Medical Assistant (MA) is an unlicensed individual who performs basic administrative, clerical, and routine medical tasks and procedures under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider. They support clinic operations, room patients, collect data, prepare patients for evaluation, and may administer medications, perform lab draws, and assist in procedures within their scope of practice.
Responsibilities
- Support clinic operations
- Room patients, collecting/recording patient data including medical histories, questionnaires, medications, height, weight, vital signs, pain, and fall risk
- Prepare patients for clinician evaluation
- Apply and remove dressings
- Administer medications (oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and inhaled)
- Remove sutures
- Perform lab draws
- Participate in/perform in-clinic procedures and other similar treatments/procedures within the MA scope of practice and organizational policy
Requirements
- Certification as a Certified Medical Assistant
- Graduate from an accredited medical assistant program
- Completed a formal medical training program of the United States Armed Forces AND one year back-office patient care experience in a medical office
- Previous medical training such as an EMT, Nurse Assistant or Certified Nurse Assistant AND one year back-office patient care experience in a medical office
- Associate degree or higher in a clinical healthcare field and one-year back-office patient care experience in a medical office
- California certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (Desired)
- Experience within a specific service line specialty to which applying (Desired)
- Medical office experience to include front and/or back-office operations (Desired)
- Previous phlebotomy experience, if required by specialty service (Desired)
Skills
- Skilled in both front and back-office clinic operations
- Familiarity with medication administration (oral, subcutaneous/intramuscular injections, inhaled medications)
- Performing blood draws
- Supporting in-clinic procedural services
- Professional and effective communication with physicians, staff, patients, and the public
- Professional and respectful demeanor
- Basic medical/technical competence
- General knowledge of point of care laboratory equipment
- Utilizing clerical and computer skills for medical office support functions
- Sensitivity for the patient and their family
- Maintaining strict confidentiality
- Ability to follow instructions
- Ability to work quickly and accurately in a fast-paced environment
- Analytical and grammatical skills for effective verbal and written communication
- Organizational and multi-tasking skills
- Ability to fulfill essential functions of the position and other clinic-based duties
