About the Role
This is a founding people-leadership role responsible for building and leading the storage engineering team and stack for Mistral's sovereign AI cloud. You will be hands-on initially, solving the hardest problems, and immediately focus on hiring, coaching, and setting growth paths for your team.
Responsibilities
- Stand up the storage stack — block, file, object — for training, sandbox, and general compute workloads.
- Make build-vs-buy decisions: deploy and harden vendor platforms where they excel; design and write proprietary services in Go where they don't.
- Own the data plane, including allocation, duplication, tiering, backup and recovery, and S3-compatible APIs.
- Plan capacity across datacenters and failure domains for petabyte-scale storage.
- Build the storage team from scratch, including hiring, onboarding, coaching, performance management, and setting ownership standards.
- Partner with Product Managers to define the storage roadmap and make technical and business trade-offs.
Requirements
- 2+ years of people leadership experience, including hiring, coaching, providing feedback, and growing engineers.
- Experience building storage systems (object, block, or distributed filesystems), not just operating them.
- Deep understanding of distributed systems fundamentals: durability, consistency, replication, erasure coding, and failure domains.
- Shipped production systems in Go, or have experience in C++ or Rust and are ready to write Go daily.
- Comfort with hardware realities: HDD, SSD, and NVMe tiers, and their associated economics.
- 8+ years of experience building backend or infrastructure systems.
- Experience partnering with product, design, and business teams to ship software to users.
- A low-ego, team-first mindset.
