About the Role

As a Senior Lawyer in the Everyday Banking, Digital & Retail Banking legal team, you will provide clear, practical, and strategic legal advice on a broad range of retail banking matters. You will collaborate with Westpac teams to support product development, respond to regulatory changes, and ensure customer communications are clear and appropriate. This role also involves contributing to Westpac's engagement with regulators and industry bodies, helping the business navigate emerging legal obligations while prioritizing customers.

Responsibilities

  • Provide clear, practical, and strategic legal advice across a broad range of retail banking matters.
  • Work closely with teams across Westpac to support the development of banking products.
  • Respond to regulatory changes.
  • Ensure customer communications are clear and appropriate.
  • Contribute to Westpac’s engagement with regulators and industry bodies.
  • Help the business navigate emerging legal obligations.
  • Keep customers at the center of decision-making.
  • Build trusted relationships with senior leaders and cross-functional teams.
  • Turn complex legal requirements into practical business solutions.

Requirements

  • Sound legal judgment and the ability to provide practical advice in a complex financial services environment.
  • Legal experience across financial services regulation, payment products, customer protection, regulatory reform, or emerging legal obligations.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory frameworks, such as the Corporations Act, ASIC Act, Banking Code of Practice, ePayments Code, or Spam Act.
  • Ability to explain complex legal matters clearly and provide practical, strategic advice to senior leaders and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong communication, relationship-building, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with close attention to detail.
  • A proactive and adaptable approach, with the confidence to progress matters independently and contribute effectively within a collaborative team.
  • Experience advising on payment systems, payments reform, scams and fraud prevention frameworks, or working in agile project delivery is valuable.
