About the Role
CBC News is seeking an exceptional leader and accomplished journalist to drive editorial assignment of Canadian coverage, ensuring audiences receive essential news daily. As an executive producer, you will collaborate with news leaders nationwide to guide live and daily domestic news across visual, audio, text, streaming, and social platforms. This dynamic role requires fearlessness amid ambiguity, calmness under pressure, and the ability to deploy teams for accurate information gathering and verification. You will leverage data and research to understand audience behavior, possess extensive knowledge of live production and digital presentation, and foster experimentation for transformative change within the newsroom. Adherence to CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices is paramount, alongside a commitment to identifying new perspectives and driving inclusive journalism. Collaboration and team development are key to success in this critical role.
Responsibilities
- Drive journalism, innovation, and connection.
- Determine story coverage 24/7 across platforms in collaboration with the co-executive producer.
- Scan the competition, review meeting minutes, and create calendars for upcoming events.
- Pivot quickly to cover breaking and live news, and plan for future events and specials.
- Innovate approaches to report live from the field.
- Oversee assignment meetings and the pitch process, ensuring Canadian overview in daily news coverage.
- Ensure deployment roadmaps, budgets, and travel are planned.
- Coordinate coverage with producers across CBC News and integrate world and regional teams.
- Manage deployments while prioritizing employee well-being.
- Connect with senior leadership regarding staffing, relationships, and shift changes.
- Create a culture of collaboration, feedback, and support, considering team safety and well-being.
- Expand reach to new and younger news consumers and deepen engagement with all Canadians.
- Translate audience insights and data into actionable content strategies.
- Uphold CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices and help the team navigate ethical and legal considerations.
- Champion content reflecting diversity and inclusivity, ensuring missing voices are included.
- Collaborate with journalistic leaders to ensure daily coverage reflects stories that help Canadians understand their world.
- Demonstrate the role of a public broadcaster in a media landscape with misinformation.
- Prioritize verification and use data to drive audience-focused strategies.
- Translate big ideas into tangible actions.
Requirements
- Minimum of seven years of leadership experience in a fast-paced news environment, including breaking news, national coverage, and overseeing large teams through change.
- Experience in risk assessment and management is an asset.
- Experience in change management is an asset.
- Exceptional critical thinking and news judgment.
- Deep knowledge of legal and ethical issues in journalism.
- Astute strategist capable of translating audience insights and data into effective content decisions and programming results.
- Ability to find solutions to technical, resource, and operational issues.
- Ability to make decisions on tight deadlines.
- Ability to juggle multiple short and long-term tasks and projects.
- Comfort navigating rapid change, troubleshooting complex situations, and making swift decisions under pressure.
- Deep and nuanced understanding of domestic politics, events, geography, and history.
- Strong cultural awareness and sensitivity.
- Stellar communication and collaboration skills.
- University degree or equivalent professional experience.
- Flexibility to work varying hours and overtime, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to work on-site.
