About the Role

The Pest Control and Hoarding Specialist works proactively and responsively with tenants and staff to prepare tenant units for pest management intervention. This role educates staff and tenants on maintaining a pest-free environment through demonstrated techniques for unit preparation, decluttering, and related life skills.

Responsibilities

Assist tenants in becoming self-sufficient in cleaning and maintaining a pest-free unit, including laundry, sorting, storage, and removal of unwanted items.
Shift furniture, pack/unpack clothing, dishes, books, and other household goods, and clear floors, closets, and cupboards.
Assist tenants in developing new skills, habits, and outlooks to maintain their unit safely, reduce clutter, and organize the unit.
Act as an educator and resource to tenants and colleagues.
Work one-on-one with tenants to identify issues of hoarding, bedbugs, pests, or excessive clutter affecting their functioning and quality of life.
Provide regular guidance and encouragement to tenants and staff to maintain units in a safe and healthy state.
Demonstrate ways to reduce clutter and organize units for staff and tenants.
Work with staff to support tenants struggling with unit maintenance to learn essential living skills.
Develop educational materials for staff and tenants on decluttering.
Work with the team to identify units requiring intervention.
Assist staff and tenants in identifying pests, particularly bedbugs.
Assist staff and tenants with preparation for pest management and extermination.
Act within relevant legislations, including the Ontario Human Rights Code, AODA, RTA, Mental Health Act, Child and Family Services Act, PHIPA, Housing Services Act, and Ontario Fire and Building Codes.

Comply with Neighbours' policies, including client information confidentiality.
Represent the agency positively with clients, colleagues, and the community.
Attend regular supervision meetings with the Manager, Support Services for work expectation review and performance evaluation.

Requirements

Completion of a Structural Pesticide Exterminator License from the Ministry of Environment Conservation and Parks (MECP).
Completion of a College or University Degree in Community Development or Social Service/Social Work or equivalent.
Minimum 3 years’ experience in hoarding and pest management with the ability to assess and effectively manage pest control issues.
Minimum 3 years of experience working with marginalized and ethno-cultural populations, people experiencing homelessness, and individuals living with mental health challenges.
Must be comfortable working in environments with bugs and hygiene challenges.
Understand and respect confidentiality in a tenant-centred mental health environment.
Ability to interact effectively with tenants and staff, and work as a team.
Familiarity or proficiency in Google Productivity Suite (Docs, Sheets and Drive) is an asset.
Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including negotiation abilities.
Training in trauma-informed practice.
Familiarity with life safety systems, fire codes, building codes, and other relevant legislation.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
A successful police record check for Vulnerable Sector is required.
Candidates must be legally entitled to work in the country where this role is located.
