About the Role
This position requires a strong understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient care, including knowledge of ophthalmologic instrumentation and testing equipment. The role involves managing daily patient flow, leading morning huddles, and ensuring efficient use of time. Communication with patients, co-workers, and supervisors is critical.
Responsibilities
- Assists the doctor in patient care promptly and professionally.
- Performs technical workups, patient interviews, and special testing.
- Communicates with patients regarding follow-up care, surgeries, procedures, schedule changes, and symptoms.
- Maintains and cleans all equipment, reporting any issues.
- Returns phone calls to patients and pharmacies.
- Assists in minor surgery.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Interviews patients and documents histories efficiently and accurately.
- Performs refraction, lensometry, keratometry, tonometry, visual fields, Amsler grid testing, muscle testing, and pupil examination when required.
- Utilizes proper eye drop technique and sterility.
- Understands and uses proper sterile technique.
- Utilizes proper universal precaution procedures.
- Understands characteristics of common anterior segment disorders and oculoplastic conditions.
- Communicates with patients about cataract surgery.
- Follows procedures for surgical and procedural consents.
- Develops the daily room schedule for providers.
- Schedules daily assignments for techs.
- Supervises techs.
- Responsible for medication and supply ordering.
- Provides ongoing training to techs.
- Schedules surgeries for attending providers in conjunction with their office staff.
- Monitors and completes competencies for tech staff.
- Is a proactive member of the TJC readiness team.
- Troubleshoots equipment issues.
- Contacts vendors for assistance as required.
- Participates in the evaluation of techs.
- Maintains certification.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Successful completion of JCAHPO ophthalmic assistant certification required.
- 3-5 years of experience preferred, or a combination of education and management/leadership experience will be considered.
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant certification required.
- Requires frequent standing and walking.
- Requires occasional lifting of light objects (≤20 lbs.).
- Requires routine reaching, grasping, and fine manipulation.
- Requires strong visual and auditory acuity.
- Requires multitasking, prioritizing clinical and laboratory workflows, and coordinating with interdisciplinary teams.
- Requires emotional resilience due to frequent interruptions, shifting priorities, and the need for precise and compassionate interaction with patients and colleagues.
- May involve exposure to infectious materials, biological specimens, cleaning agents, sharps, chemical reagents, and wet surfaces.
- PPE use, TB testing, and schedule flexibility are commonly required.
